41. Sorin: There and Back Again

Overview

Professor Hayden announces the third trial: a solitary, magic-versus-nature obstacle race with safety charms and staged starts. Sorin discovers Arcady’s and Everen’s half-bond is dampening their magic, threatening Sorin’s protection. Sorin secretly doses Elixir, and she and Arcady head to the lock shop to exchange secrets before the trial.

Summary

In a small classroom, Professor Hayden unveils the third trial to the six remaining students: an obstacle race against nature, undertaken on the Feast of Storms. Contestants will start separately, collect bronze, then silver, then gold medals by overcoming elemental barriers using any viable branch of magic, and return to the Citadel amphitheater to finish. Safety is stressed; each student receives a breakable distress charm keyed to tiś‑té.

Sorin notes expectations that Edin Vayne will win overall, with Rahela, Cind, and Jordin close behind, and senses Magnes’s unseen influence ensuring Arcady’s continued participation. Hayden’s reminder that magic pervades earth, air, water, and leylines lands heavily on the group, especially given recent dangers.

After practice, Sorin observes Arcady struggling to trigger the charm and confronts them in a secluded corridor. Pressed, Arcady confesses that Arcady and Everen are only half‑bonded, which temporarily dampens both their magics and may undermine Sorin’s protection during the trial.

The admission escalates Sorin’s fear over their dwindling options. Demanding clarity, Sorin insists Arcady find answers now. Arcady relents and proposes they go to the hidden lock shop to reveal their secrets.

Before leaving, Sorin retrieves a vial of Elixir from her cell and takes a small dose to steady herself and bolster her chances, choosing not to share the drug or its secret. As they descend through Vatra toward the shop, both acknowledge that once their truths are laid bare, the larger pattern—and its likely grim implications—will finally emerge.
