53. Arcady: The Third Trial

Climbing Cragspeak toward the monastery, Arcady and Sorin find the third trial’s final obstacle: a narrow, aging stone bridge over a deep canyon. Rahela is stranded midway, paralyzed by fear and wind. Time pressure and Elixir-fueled urgency push Arcady to help despite Sorin’s warning that the bridge may only bear one person.

Arcady crawls out onto the span, focusing past the drop and distrust that Sorin might still be compromised. Encouraged to move, Rahela hesitates until a crack splits the bridge ahead of Arcady, confirming the structure’s fragility and forcing immediate action.

As the wind rises, Sorin casts Zama magic to quiet it, buying precious moments. Arcady urges Rahela to push forward, appealing to her drive to win the tokens and finish first. Inch by inch, Rahela scrapes to safety while Arcady clings to the unstable stone.

With a gap now blocking retreat or advance, Arcady empties a water bladder and shapes the flow with Kalsh, while Rahela helps freeze it into an ice patch bridging the break. Arcady roughens the ice for grip and crawls across, her seal flaring, trusting the improvised repair under Elixir-enhanced power.

Rahela, now safe, coaches Arcady the last stretch. Arcady reaches solid ground, both shaken but intact, and glimpses the tokens beyond. The chapter ends with Sorin still on the far side, her turn to risk the fragile crossing.
