50. Arcady: The Lark Sings

Arcady and Kelwyn are surprised by Larkin’s arrival, who demands Hayden’s research. Arcady refuses, warning of Elixir’s risks and Larkin’s likely profiteering, while Larkin insists she wants to help the Struck. Tension rises until Sorin appears, revealing past orders to kill Larkin and reclaim a stolen claw, and threatening consequences for Larkin’s return to Loc.

Larkin produces Arcady’s original dragonstone seal and, instead of returning it, hands it to Kelwyn. When Kelwyn reads the inscription, he realizes Arcady is of House Eremia. Feeling betrayed that others knew while he did not, Kelwyn rejects Arcady and expels everyone from the Last Golden, citing the loss of his family in the first Strike and refusing further risk for “the Plaguebringer’s get.”

Arcady retrieves the old seal, sensing a potent spark from it, and Larkin—now contrite—asks again for Hayden’s research, offering to sign for it. Arcady advises Larkin to approach Professor Hayden directly after tonight’s confrontation, while Larkin cautiously confirms with Sorin that her broken promise is forgiven. Sorin lifts Larkin’s banishment, warning she herself may not survive the night.

Kelwyn does not return, and grief threatens to overwhelm Arcady. Determined to face Ammil and rescue Everen, Arcady opts to use Elixir despite the risks. Sorin, warning about its impulsivity, recommends a half vial; Arcady drinks and feels fear burn away and the bond to Everen strengthen. Sorin then finishes the vial, also steadied by its power.

Fortified and resolute after devastating personal fallout, Arcady and Sorin heed the morning bells. They prepare to return to the Citadel, intent on confronting Ammil and saving Everen, with Elixir-enhanced focus but uncertain limits.
