37. Sorin: Unmasked

Sorin tracks the Veil-torn magic to a snowy clearing and kills the wraith-stag as it menaces Arcady and Everen. Everen pins Sorin while Arcady holds Sorin’s dragonbone knife to her throat; Jaculus circles anxiously. Pressed for answers, Sorin admits her Citadel origins and a hidden life, while Arcady accuses her of orchestrated proximity at the university and during the Trials.

Everen recognizes Sorin from the tower auction and the barrow hill, deducing she deliberately missed a killing strike. Sorin confirms she repeatedly chose not to kill them—including at the gods’ breach and in a cave—and reveals scars where Arcady bit her during a ravenous, magic-lost state. Sorin adds that her master administered ambrosia then, keeping Arcady alive for ulterior motives.

Seeking a bargain, Sorin swears not to flee; Arcady cuts her bonds. When ordered to name her master, Sorin tries to say Magnes but collapses, seizing under a mental block that prevents speech. At Everen’s urging she stops struggling, recovers, and explains she’s discovered a knot in her mind that resists untangling, likely placed to ensure loyalty beyond her Vow of Silence.

Sorin argues that Magnes will kill Arcady and Everen once they cease being useful, and that only by working together can they overcome the compulsion and learn what Magnes fears. She proposes an alliance: help break the block and she will disclose everything. As Everen and Arcady confer silently, Sorin recognizes she’s no longer Magnes’s unblinking Eye—she has chosen to resist.
