Overview
Pyrrha’s apparent betrayal is revealed to be a coded attempt to help: Judith carries another bug, and the conversation inside the barracks points Camilla toward Gideon Nav’s body in the morgue. Palamedes briefly takes control of Camilla to negotiate with We Suffer, offering retrieval of Gideon’s body in exchange for the Sixth House and explaining that the corpse may also be Nona’s only chance of survival.
The chapter shifts the conflict from helpless captivity to urgent infiltration. With Ianthe present but possibly limited, Camilla prepares to act before sundown, and Nona becomes an active part of the plan despite her worsening condition.
Summary
After hearing Pyrrha alive over the barracks audio, We Suffer reacts with anger and despair. A masked Edenite reports that the captive necromancer has escaped after the last shift was disabled, deepening We Suffer’s belief that Crown has betrayed Blood of Eden and stolen Judith Deuteros. Nona protests that Pyrrha would not betray them, and Camilla urges We Suffer to scan for another active line rather than assume the situation is lost.
Camilla and Nona briefly comfort each other while Nona feels increasingly unwell. Camilla notices that Nona’s recent fighting stance resembled two-handed sword practice, even though Camilla has trained her one-handed, and Nona develops a nosebleed. We Suffer then confirms another communication node, and Camilla realizes it must be on Judith, meaning Pyrrha has deliberately given them coded information.
Palamedes takes control of Camilla’s body and identifies himself to We Suffer. He argues that Ianthe Tridentarius is controlling a dead body at a distance, which limits her powers, and that Gideon Nav’s corpse is both Blood of Eden’s key to the Locked Tomb and the possible way to save Nona. Palamedes bargains for the Sixth House Oversight Body in exchange for retrieving Gideon’s body, warning that Ianthe may be able to escape quickly if frightened.
When Camilla returns, We Suffer acknowledges that Palamedes’s possession is real but says she cannot immediately give up the Sixth House’s location. Camilla agrees only to try to recover Gideon’s body in return for information, assistance, and use of the shuttle. We Suffer also asks that, if Camilla finds a way off-world, she take an unspecified package away from New Rho.
The renewed audio line reveals Pyrrha, Crown, and Ianthe around Judith. Crown mistrusts Pyrrha and condemns the use of Gideon Nav’s corpse as bait, while Pyrrha speaks in guarded clues and says the corpses are in the morgue. Ianthe wards Judith unconscious with Judith’s own material and takes Crown away, leaving Camilla to decode Pyrrha’s message.
Camilla asks Nona for Pyrrha’s nicknames and realizes that Pyrrha believes Nona is the key to reaching the body. Nona admits she has a fever and is dying but insists she can help. With over eight hours until sundown, Camilla asks We Suffer for immediate supplies: scissors, iris dye, and the blackest clothes available, signaling a rapid infiltration plan.
