Overview
Blood of Eden relocates Nona’s group while trying to find the captive Sixth, but the search has poor odds until Nona remembers Honesty’s encounter with the Convoy. Nona’s return to her old gang becomes both a tactical mission and an emotional farewell, as Honesty provides the location and Hot Sauce forgives Nona. The chapter turns Nona’s school friendships into the key to Palamedes’s rescue effort while giving Nona a brief, painful restoration of belonging before she leaves.
Summary
Blood of Eden moves the group through the city in covered personnel trucks under a hot, stormy sky. Commander We Suffer keeps Kiriona Gaia separate from Nona’s truck because she does not want all their assets together, and Camilla, heavily drugged for pain after a medic checks her wounds, volunteers to ride with Kiriona. Palamedes, now controlling Ianthe Naberius’s body, and Camilla briefly part with practiced trust rather than a dramatic farewell.
Inside Nona’s truck, Palamedes examines the Captain and finds signs of dangerous micro-seizures and possible brain damage, but admits that in Ianthe’s body he cannot do more than keep her from choking. We Suffer questions Palamedes about the shuttle and discusses the trapped Cohort soldiers and the Sixth House Oversight Body. Palamedes warns that Ianthe left wards and necromantic traps behind and insists Blood of Eden should avoid worsening the Cohort soldiers’ fragile morale.
We Suffer explains that Merv Wing has been hiding the Sixth underground in constantly moving trucks, with only a few likely sites and poor odds of locating them quickly and safely. Palamedes demands a swift rescue despite the risks, while Pash bluntly points out that the numbers cannot simply be improved. Nona then realizes that Honesty once saw the Convoy and offers this memory as a possible lead, surprising We Suffer.
Because Honesty distrusts uniforms, Nona goes alone to his decrepit apartment while Blood of Eden soldiers wait outside. Honesty is wary because Hot Sauce told him Nona is a zombie, but Nona insists that Hot Sauce should be believed first and begs for the street where Honesty saw the Convoy. Honesty lets her speak, and Hot Sauce appears instead of rejecting Nona outright.
Inside, Honesty uses the stolen classroom map to identify the location and writes it down for the adults. Nona gives messages for the schoolchildren and the teacher, warns Honesty not to take jobs around the Convoy again, and prepares to leave. Before going, Nona asks Hot Sauce why she chose her name, then embraces her and asks for forgiveness so she can know what forgiveness feels like.
Hot Sauce awkwardly but sincerely tells Nona that they are cool and that she will always love her. Nona asks whether she can be in the gang again, and Hot Sauce allows it, assigning Nona permanent Kevin bathroom duty as punishment for being a zombie. Nona leaves with the Convoy location and a fragile restoration of belonging.
