Before the Hour of Science, Hot Sauce reminds Nona that Nona is still assigned to lookout. Nona notices that the Angel still looks tired and says she should make the Angel coffee because a Teacher’s Aide should care for teachers too. Hot Sauce, still watching outside, instructs Nona to pretend she has a small radio and is making a call while hiding her mouth.

The Angel prepares the class for a temperature lesson involving ice cubes and socks, then gives Nona Noodle’s leash and asks Nona to take him outside. Because the pavement is hot, the Angel tells Nona to put Noodle’s pattens on so his feet will not burn, and explains that Noodle cannot stay inside because the hair dryer frightens him.

Nona checks that the door light is red, guarding against people coming into the school building. She struggles to put all six pattens on Noodle, who resists and even wriggles one shoe off with another foot. Once ready, Noodle clatters into the courtyard, sniffs around, relieves himself, drinks chilled water, and settles in the shade.

Overheated and faint in the courtyard, Nona finally carries out Hot Sauce’s instruction. She pretends to speak into a tiny radio and invents a call to Crown, saying she misses Crown, wants Crown at her beach birthday party, asks Crown to wear her hair down, and says she loves her.

After the pretend call, Nona rests on the cool stone bench in the shade. With the smoke cleared, the air feels easier to breathe, and the quiet courtyard makes Nona sleepy as she listens to Noodle breathing nearby.
