Overview

Nona’s ordinary school routine becomes charged with suspicion when Hot Sauce warns that someone may be watching the classroom from a nearby building. The Angel’s visibly worried state and Hot Sauce’s insistence that Nona stay on school grounds suggest danger around the school, even though Nona sees nothing conclusive.

The chapter deepens Nona’s attachment to school and Hot Sauce’s group while also reinforcing concerns about Nona’s health and unknown identity. Everyday childhood interactions continue under the pressure of surveillance, poverty, and violence in the city.

Summary

Nona begins the day with the usual walk to school alongside Pyrrha and Camilla. They pass through the damaged park, where Nona avoids looking at the cleaned cages, and Pyrrha leaves for work after kissing Nona goodbye. Camilla takes Nona the rest of the way, noting that a newly ruined building was hit by a very large gun, then declines the school’s hospitality and disappears back into the city.

At school, the teacher tells Nona that Hot Sauce has arrived unusually early. Inside the classroom, Hot Sauce orders Nona away from the window and says someone may be watching from the fourth floor of a green building. Nona worries the watchers might be interested in her, but Hot Sauce says they were there before Nona and announces that she is investigating.

During lessons, Nona tries to focus on classroom chores and helping the younger children, but the possible watchers make Nona uneasy and lead Nona’s thoughts back to larger questions, including who Nona is. The Angel arrives looking exhausted and disheveled, and Hot Sauce notices the change immediately. Nona compares the Angel’s condition to Pyrrha after nights of drinking, but Hot Sauce insists the Angel does not drink.

At break, Nona shares fruit with Beautiful Ruby, Honesty, Born in the Morning, and Hot Sauce. The children tease Nona about looking sick and about Nona’s vanity, which makes Nona feel included rather than hurt. Honesty reveals that he has an underground job after lunch stripping material from pipes, and Hot Sauce bluntly calls the work dangerous.

When science begins, Hot Sauce tells Nona that Nona was right about the Angel being worried and instructs Nona to stay on the school grounds while exercising Noodle. Nona keeps Noodle in the shaded fenced area, watches the surrounding buildings and road, and sees nothing clearly abnormal except a possibly dead person in an alley. Afterward Nona reports everything to Hot Sauce, who accepts the uneventful report as useful, leaving Nona pleased and reassured.
