Overview
Nona spends the school day with Hot Sauce after Crown’s unexplained revelation, and their friendship becomes more intimate and dangerous. Hot Sauce reveals that the Angel is being protected, a public broadcast about necromancers is coming, and Hot Sauce herself is linked to an anti-necromancer cell separate from Blood of Eden. Nona, frightened by her own condition and the violence around her, confides her Secret to Hot Sauce, who promises to protect it and look after her.
Summary
After Crown leaves without explaining her revelation, Nona arrives late at school. Honesty has seen Crown from the window, and the children tease Nona about Crown while Hot Sauce greets Noodle and admits she is glad Nona is alive because Nona is part of her crew. Nona, worried by Pyrrha’s earlier warning about Hot Sauce, studies Hot Sauce’s body language and asks Hot Sauce not to be sad if anything happens to her.
During school, Hot Sauce quietly tells Nona that the Angel was brought in by a protected vehicle and that someone has been watching the school in an organized way. When Nona wonders why the Angel matters so much, the teacher interrupts and realizes no one has come to collect Nona. Hot Sauce then says people have gone home because a broadcast is being raised, which surprises the teacher but not the Angel, who admits she has heard something and draws the teacher into a private conversation.
Most of the children leave for lunch, leaving Nona, Hot Sauce, and Kevin in the classroom. While Kevin sleeps, Nona and Hot Sauce lie on mats and whisper. Hot Sauce says the broadcast will be about necromancers, and Nona realizes Hot Sauce heard this at the park the previous night, where necromancers were burned in cages. Hot Sauce confirms she was there and says the necromancers died too quickly because someone higher up shot them before they burned.
Hot Sauce asks whether the people in the park were Nona’s people, and Nona admits one of them might have been. Hot Sauce reveals, through gestures and whispers, that she, Honesty, and Born in the Morning are connected to an anti-necromancer group, but she fiercely denies being Blood of Eden, calling them traitors and saying they sell guns. This confession deepens Nona’s bond with Hot Sauce, and Hot Sauce says she wishes Nona were her sister.
Hot Sauce then explains that her older brothers died fighting necromancer forces, and that her base surrendered only for her cousin to drive an explosives-filled truck into the enemy, killing both enemies and himself. Nona is horrified by the cycle of killing, but Hot Sauce remains committed to shooting the first necromancer she can. Overwhelmed, Nona tells Hot Sauce her Secret about her condition; Hot Sauce suggests the Angel’s clinic and even an organ market, then promises not to tell anyone. Hot Sauce comforts Nona, covers Kevin with her jacket, and stays beside Nona while Nona falls asleep.
