Overview
Camilla continues testing Nona’s strange dreams, but the session only deepens the mystery of Nona’s identity and the drowned, painted-face girl. Pyrrha reveals that she secretly went to the park and burn cages, where she saw Hot Sauce among dangerous people, forcing Nona to confront the possibility that her friend is involved in something darker. The chapter ends with the household’s fragile routine shattered when an armed intruder breaks into the apartment.
Summary
The next morning, Camilla records Nona describing another dream. Nona says she is holding the painted-face girl under cloudy, good water while also feeling arms around herself, but the images blur together. Camilla has Nona demonstrate the embrace on Camilla’s body, then concludes that the information is useful, though Camilla still does not know who Nona is.
Nona tries to turn the session into a personal conversation, asking Camilla what is “sexy” after hearing the schoolchildren use the word. Nona says she finds a shampoo poster with two flowers sexy; Camilla deflects toward breakfast and says Palamedes likes “strong work ethic” and “high test scores.” Camilla’s lack of warmth disappoints Nona, who has been hoping for another reassuring smile.
Nona goes to the front room and immediately notices that Pyrrha did not sleep. Pyrrha tries to evade the accusation while making pikelets, but Nona reads Pyrrha’s posture and tension. Pyrrha quietly admits she went to the park, then refuses to explain fully, saying she was not the only one there and that whatever happened was not something Camilla and Palamedes would understand as saving people.
Pyrrha warns Nona to be careful around the children at school, especially Hot Sauce, because Pyrrha saw Hot Sauce at the burn cages with dangerous company. Nona is shaken, but after calming herself with measured breathing, decides that Hot Sauce must have had a good reason and refuses to stop being Hot Sauce’s friend. Pyrrha clarifies that Pyrrha is urging caution, not separation.
To escape the tension, Nona asks Pyrrha what Pyrrha finds sexy, and Pyrrha answers “landmine people,” meaning people who set the world to explode and walk away, then adds redheads. Palamedes then enters in Camilla’s body, contradicting Camilla’s earlier answer by saying he finds nurses’ outfits sexy. Breakfast remains strained: Palamedes eats Camilla’s food, Camilla is quiet and angry, and Nona struggles through the meal under Camilla’s scrutiny.
After Palamedes leaves, the apartment’s locked door bursts open. An armed, masked intruder orders everyone to put heads down and hands up, threatening to shoot at the first sign of “zombie” behavior.
