Overview
Livira and Malar discover they can enter Livira’s written stories through Evar’s book, but breaking character ejects them. After failed attempts, Livira plays along, bonds with the narrative, and chooses independence over being saved by Evar, tightening her hold on the book. An eerie white child intrudes and shatters the story, wrenching Livira out.
Summary
At the Mechanism’s pool, Livira and Malar watch a recent past Evar carrying Livira’s ancient book. Touching it drops them into one of Livira’s stories. Malar, inhabiting a general, impulsively kills Heflin Hosten, deviating from the plot and ejecting them back to the library, proving that breaking character collapses the narrative.
They try again. At Hosten’s dinner, Livira manifests as Serra Leetar and Malar as Meelan. Leetar, refusing the setup, suicides on a knife, hurling them out and painfully demonstrating that even self-harm within the story feels real. Malar agrees to wait while Livira proceeds alone, believing she can better steer the tale.
Livira next falls into a knight-in-armor story she wrote to teach Evar that some things can’t be saved. Overwhelmed by the narrative’s passion, she resists surrender and deliberately turns away, seeking the intended destination.
The scene resolves into Crath City’s dinner once more. Livira, as Leetar, plays along, converses with Evar, and carefully deepens her grip on the tale without rupturing it. When the ballroom beckons, she rejects the perfect rescue arc—deciding Leetar should not need saving—and walks away to choose her own path, with maid Twila fetching her coat. Her control of the book strengthens as the story thickens around her.
A spectral white child, thin and rain-soaked, appears in the entry hall—neither Yute nor Yamala—and with a touch ruptures the narrative, tearing Livira from the story at the moment she seemed closest to claiming the book.
