Overview
With the party trapped, an assistant reopens the door and privately confronts Celcha and Hellet. He reveals they are temporal anomalies that could fracture reality, offers them eternal service as assistants or a "repair" that may change or kill them, and admits to manipulating events and delaying the group.
The stakes shift from survival to destiny, placing Celcha and Hellet at the center of the library’s designs.
Summary
As Markeet and Sternus argue about seeking the centre circle to survive, tension rises among trainees, with Kenton accusing the librarians of keeping the door closed. The white door then dissolves, revealing an assistant, easing the group’s panic. Markeet briefly confers and sends Celcha and Hellet to speak with the figure.
Walking away from the party, the assistant philosophizes about time and eternity, praising the nearby city as a rare, hopeful peace between canith and humans. He admits to occasional interference to preserve possibilities encoded in the library’s purpose.
The assistant explains he cannot see past Celcha and Hellet: they are “turbulence” and “cracks” in time, rare anomalies drawn to the library. He warns that unchecked, they might begin seeing or speaking with ghosts, signaling dangerous consequences for the flow of time.
He offers two choices. First, accept eternity by serving as assistants, stepping outside time. Second, be “repaired” so they cease to be cracks; the process always works, but may alter who they are or leave them dead, becoming whatever stops them from breaking the world.
Pressed on timing, he says their recent turbulence forced this talk and notes they’ve found two notable books. Challenged on coercion, he insists the library informs, not compels, but admits he delayed them by locking the door to speak amid ancestral works as a caution. When Hellet calls him Yute and questions his judgment, Yute recoils, concedes he overstepped, and leaves the choice to them.
