Chapter 45

Overview

Celcha’s planted ganar targets Livira, mistaking her and Evar for the ghosts who guided Hellet. Hellet admits his corruption and opposes the machine, dying as Meelan sacrifices herself to save Livira. Starval uses the orb to destroy the construct.

As the wreck is set to explode, three blood-pools open separate paths: Yolanda steps first; Mayland sends Evar through and collapses that portal, stranding Livira, who leads survivors through another. After the blast, Celcha meets Hellet as ghosts, signaling a profound shift in their arcs.

Summary

Livira confronts the assistant—Hellet—after the ganar-automaton unmistakably targets her. Hellet reveals his sister Celcha created the construct, believing Livira and Evar were the ghosts who aided him and desecrated the poisoned necropolis where he had caused mass deaths. He confesses Mayland’s manipulation and his own corruption in taking the white to oppose the library.

The ganar repeatedly assaults Hellet’s barrier. Livira pleads that ignorance, not malice, drove their actions. Hellet acknowledges Celcha is ahead in time, but her planted agents remain. He hurls the machine back, then falters as his doubts fracture his assistant form.

The construct breaks through. Kerrol brandishes the orb, Clovis defends Evar, and Hellet is seized and smashed. Meelan tackles Livira aside, taking the killing blow. As the automaton swings Hellet’s body at Evar, Starval sling-shoots the smoldering orb into its maw; an internal blast drops the machine, belching white smoke.

With the wreck likely to explode, Yute indicates three portals formed by Hellet’s blood. Emotions flare: Clovis nearly attacks Yute, but is checked by Wentworth and cratalacs. Yolanda declares for Irad and steps through one pool. Mayland claims Jaspeth’s path; Clovis and Starval follow him. Kerrol chooses Yute’s compromise path despite Mayland’s protests.

Mayland and Livira lift Evar into their chosen pool; Mayland then bars Livira and withdraws, collapsing the portal with his blackened fingertips, stranding her. As smoke thickens, Yute asks Livira to watch Yolanda. Livira gathers Leetar and survivors and leads them through the remaining pool.

After the detonation, Celcha, untouched, collapses under guilt. Hellet appears to her as a ghost; he feels free, and together they resolve to seek his body, marking a pivotal reconciliation beyond death.
