Chapter 8
Overview
Celcha and Hellet lead trainees and librarians into a colossal ganar-built city within the library, confronting its history of fire and loss. Guided by Hellet, Lutna uncovers a valuable book, thrilling the librarians. On return, the ganar door won’t open, trapping the party without clear access to sustenance, escalating survival stakes.
Summary
During a rest in training, Lutna attempts a greeting in a ganar tongue, prompting Hellet to explain its meaning and origin. Librarians Markeet and Sternus then lead the group toward a ganar-restricted chamber, which Celcha opens. Inside lies an immense, multi-level ganar city built within the chamber’s volume.
As they traverse scorched corridors and voids, the librarians describe the city’s past—trade, cultivation under constant light, and a catastrophic fire that destroyed most records. Hellet adds grim history of mass death and bone pyramids, and of cyclical ascents and descents from Attamast, underscoring enduring conflict in ganar history.
Split into small search teams, Lutna chooses to accompany Celcha and Hellet. In a soot-blackened room, Hellet uncovers two hidden books; he pockets the smaller black-edged volume and gives Lutna the ornate larger one to present. Markeet’s excitement at the find halts exploration and triggers a rapid withdrawal.
On the return, Celcha challenges Hellet about angelic influence; Hellet frames the discovery as investment in goodwill with librarians and Lutna. At the出口 door, both Hellet and Celcha fail to open it. Markeet and Sternus realize they are sealed in and admit they do not know the centre circle’s location within the maze-like city.
The trainees panic, notably Kenton. Hellet states the immediate danger bluntly: without water, thirst will kill them before hunger, crystallizing the chapter’s shift from scholarly adventure to a survival crisis.
