Summary
Suspended in a void, Livira observes Irad and Jaspeth address a vast audience, their forms tailored to her expectations. They cast Livira as the accidental author of a dangerous crack in the world. Yute is summoned to argue a fraught compromise between Irad’s memory and Jaspeth’s oblivion, a position vulnerable to doubt and nuance.
Jaspeth counters by replacing Yute with a vision: the sabber raid that annihilated Evar’s people. Livira recognizes Oanold and Algar presiding over genocide while Dust-folk stand by, implicating many. She realizes Yute’s past authority and access enabled a perilous delay that let killers reach the canith first, even if time’s distortions muddled intent and control.
