Overview
An elite city librarian arrives, furious that the newly unearthed library’s indexing has been destroyed. Hellet boldly claims he can reconstruct the arrangement and proves it, forcing Myles Carstar to let a slave direct overseers. The shift humiliates Myles and endangers Hellet and Celcha. That night, Hellet reveals Starve—the angel of death—intends to teach him how to kill all the slavers.
Summary
After the discovery of the buried library, a second angel, Starve, appears to Celcha and takes interest in her, while Myles Carstar dispenses extra rations and patronizing praise to Hellet. Work shifts from rubble to books under heavy supervision, urgency driving the extraction.
A lacquered carriage brings an elderly city librarian who erupts at the mishandling of the books and the loss of their shelving order. Myles, usually imperious, becomes deferential under her scorn. Celcha savors his discomfort, recognizing a rare inversion of power.
When Hellet declares the librarian “won’t find what you’re looking for,” he breaks every rule of slave tone. Kerns strikes him, but the librarian halts further punishment and tests Hellet’s claim. Using stones to mark stacks, Hellet identifies sets from a specific shelf; the librarian verifies related subject matter and orders Hellet to direct the arrangement.
The librarian assigns Myles to supervise proper mapping of the chamber while Hellet oversees the overseers. Celcha continues hauling books below, acting as Hellet’s ostensible partner to sustain his ruse. The reversal inflames Myles and Kerns, and Celcha anticipates brutal retaliation once the librarian leaves.
That night, after the librarian departs, Celcha confronts Hellet about the danger he has invited. Hellet names Starve the angel of death and states Starve is here to show him how to kill all the slavers—Myles, the overseers, everyone—declaring a lethal intent that raises the stakes for both siblings.
