Chapter 4
Overview
The librarian overrules Myles Carstar and requisitions Celcha and Hellet, spiriting them from the dig to Krath. Celcha witnesses the city’s scale, its canith-human society, and Hellet’s growing confidence under angelic counsel. At the wolf-mouth library, a living Assistant publicly welcomes them, and Maybe identifies him as Himma-calling Yute, signaling their formal entry into the library’s power structure.
Summary
At dawn on what Celcha believes will be her last day, the librarian confronts Myles Carstar and insists on taking Celcha and Hellet, dismissing his warnings about their “curiosity” and promising compensation. The siblings, stunned, join a convoy of book wagons and leave the Arthran dig without possessions, save for Celcha’s bundle of nootki entrusted by other slaves.
As they march toward the mountains, Celcha discovers the true scale of the world and struggles to match the wagons’ pace. Reaching Krath’s immense walls, she is awed by the city’s size and diversity. Inside, Hellet—newly talkative—speaks of canith-human history and ganar resilience, attributing his knowledge to angels Maybe and Starve, while street lamps flare to life as evening falls.
The convoy climbs toward a wolf-headed entrance carved into the mountain, where librarians supervise unloading. Celcha and Hellet work alongside humans and canith without the hostility they knew at the dig. A gleaming, smooth, statue-like being arrives: an Assistant. The apparition freezes the platform to silence, then steps before Hellet to ask his name and formally welcome him.
Celcha follows, resisting old habits of deference, and the Assistant welcomes her as well. As he departs, Maybe appears to Celcha more clearly than ever and whispers a name—Himma-calling Yute—quietly identifying the Assistant. The siblings’ status shifts from slaves at a dig to recognized entrants within the library’s domain.
