Overview
Nomad and Rebeke are presented to the Greater Good, revealed as three elder women—Confidence, Compassion, and Contemplation—who lead Beacon. They reprimand Rebeke for risking a raid to recover Elegy and acknowledge the cost: her brother’s death. Compassion offers comfort, signaling leadership that blends discipline with care.
Summary
Nomad and Rebeke are brought before the Greater Good in Beacon, expecting grandeur but finding three plainly dressed elder women who clearly command the room. A burly, bearded raider—fresh from the operation—reports while the leaders listen.
Rebeke formally addresses the trio by their call signs: Confidence, Compassion, and Contemplation, and announces she has recovered her sister, Elegy. Contemplation reminds Rebeke she’d been warned against brash actions, and Confidence underscores the cost: their brother was lost during the raid.
As Rebeke tries to respond, Compassion rises unsteadily and embraces her, wordlessly acknowledging the sacrifice. The chamber falls silent. While empathy tempers the reprimand, Nomad remains an observer on the periphery, taking tea and noting the blend of stern leadership and genuine care that defines Beacon’s rulers.
