Overview
Elegy descends into Union’s conversion halls, haunted by memories of her own transformation. She defeats guards, reaches the reserve of sunhearts, and interrupts the process just as Rebeke is being turned into a Charred. Although Elegy frees Rebeke, the cinderheart has already implanted, igniting a perilous transformation.
Summary
Elegy follows the metal steps into Union’s depths, the echoes stirring memories of her forced transformation. She reflects on being forged into a weapon—choice and self burned away—while a half-remembered descent and blinding light guide her back to this place.
At the reserve hall, Elegy finds walls lined with stored sunhearts and confronts a Charred guard. Moving with calm precision, she disables him, then fells a second attacker. The rattling sunhearts and the corridor of “souls” intensify her recollection of terror without the comfort of intact memories.
Elegy bursts into the conversion chamber, where a line of civilians waits and three rushed officials work the machinery. Rebeke lies strapped to the table, still clothed, and when the burning spear descends it sets her shirt aflame—mirroring Elegy’s own ordeal. As Rebeke’s eyes dim, Elegy tears the spear from its mount and breaks the restraints, hauling Rebeke free.
Too late, Elegy realizes the cinderheart has implanted. Rebeke’s skin ashens and the inner fire flares, beginning the Charred transformation. Desperate, Elegy searches for the sliver of sunheart she carried, while feeling again the consuming blaze that once stripped her identity, now threatening to claim Rebeke.
