Overview
Beacon’s leaders identify Nomad as a legendary “Sunlit Man” and seek his help unlocking a subterranean “Refuge of Stone.” Nomad can read the key and likely open the door, but warns it may not be salvation. The council resolves to present the risky plan to the people, prepare Beacon to move, remove Nomad’s restraints, and ready ships as the region containing the entrance nears.
Summary
Contemplation declares Nomad a legendary Sunlit Man, sparking debate among Beacon’s leaders. Compassion recounts myths of people who could endure and use sunlight, while Confidence doubts. Nomad focuses them on the stolen disc and the buried door. He admits he handled sunlight briefly and offers to read the key and communicate beyond the door.
Beacon reveals the door is the core of Lodestar Elegy’s plan to escape the Cinder King, whose control forces humanity toward deadly polar bands. Zeal urges accepting Nomad’s help. Nomad, prodded by Auxiliary’s concerns, reluctantly warns the Refuge is likely not a haven, but he cannot be certain. Despite doubts, the leaders agree this is their only hope amid dwindling sunhearts and the Cinder King’s wrath.
The Greater Good decides to bring the choice to the people and prepare to disassemble the city while prospectors locate the entrance. Nomad demands food, clothing, and a bed as his fee for translating, and release from his bracers for aiding the mission. After debate, Zeal removes the restraints.
When Confidence raises punishment for Rebeke’s disobedience, Nomad argues against tyranny masked as order. The council maintains the need for balance but assigns Rebeke to see to Nomad’s needs as part of her penalty. Nomad and Auxiliary quietly spar over contacting Wit, with Nomad reflecting on slow moral erosion.
Jeffrey Jeffrey outlines the logistical risks of moving the city; Compassion and Contemplation frame the Refuge as their last chance to defy the Cinder King’s brutality. As plans solidify, Contemplation asks if Nomad can fly a ship, noting the region containing the entrance is approaching, forcing imminent decisions and action.
