Overview

Beacon’s people are found alive and retrieved from a mud pit after the protective dome collapses. Rebeke, now the Sunlit One, vows to end sacrifices, share sunheart-recharging knowledge, and guide the Charred without tyranny. Elsewhere, the Night Brigade confirms Nomad’s escape and targets a Scadrian ship. On another world, Nomad severs his weight band, mourns Aux, and resumes his flight.

Summary

Elegy and Rebeke locate Beacon’s people in a sunken, muddy pit where they survived the day under Aux’s final dome. Using hover platforms and ropes, they begin evacuations, prioritizing the elderly. The Greater Good—Compassion, Confidence, and Contemplation—are lifted aboard, exhausted but alive.

Rebeke reveals the Cinder King is dead and confirms that sunhearts can be recharged, knowledge they intend to share freely. She accepts the title Sunlit One but refuses tyranny, promising to awaken and guide the Charred only by their choice and to end all future sacrifices. Communication with other corridors has begun, and she positions herself as a symbol while The Greater Good continues to govern.

Meanwhile in a stolen ship, Staff Sergeant Truth-Is-Waiting reports to the Night Brigade Admiral that Nomad was present and is believed dead by locals. They decide the Beaconites are unreliable sources and instead target a nearby Scadrian research vessel for recordings, implying Nomad has slipped them again.

On a distant atoll, Zellion (Nomad) waits, then recalls Aux’s corpse-weapon and cuts off his weight band. Alone and mourning Auxiliary’s true death, he refuses to risk returning to Canticle. He signals a passing boat with a mirrored shield and is taken aboard by Sho Del sailors, choosing to keep running.
