Overview

The Refuge proves to be a small Scadrian science vessel whose crew refuses to shelter the Beaconites. They admit to trading with the Cinder King, explaining his technological edge.

After a failed appeal, the Beaconites depart to face danger above, while Zellion stays behind, resigned and exhausted.

Summary

Zellion and three Beaconites enter the hidden Refuge and discover it is a small, embedded Scadrian science ship, not a vast sanctuary. Its capacity is limited, and the crew—TimeTellers—view the locals as research subjects, not evacuees.

The Scadrians test Zellion’s affiliations, offer to hire him as muscle, and dismiss pleas from Confidence, Contemplation, and Rebeke. They reveal they have been trading with the Cinder King for sunhearts and sharing technology, explaining his Charred and control bracers.

Zellion presses for temporary shelter or intervention before sunrise, but the scientists refuse, citing neutrality and interplanetary law. He notices a jar of Dor that could let him Skip away, realizing this outcome is what he’d anticipated even as he led the Beaconites here.

The Beaconites accept the rejection with weary grace, acknowledging Zellion’s efforts and the collapse of their “sanctuary” hope. They return to the surface to face approaching enemies, while Zellion, torn and resigned, remains below.

As the Cinder King’s forces close in, no protective blast comes from beneath. Exhausted and defeated, Zellion—Nomad—sits against the wall and finally allows himself to rest.
