Overview
En route to Beacon with five sunhearts, Nomad, Rebeke, Zeal, and captive Elegy assess Beacon’s dwindling options as the sun closes in. Nomad recharges from a sunheart and urges Elegy toward discipline. Elegy chooses to learn controlled combat but refuses release, acknowledging she would still attack.
Their call to Confidence confirms Beacon has only eight workable ships and people exposed on decks, raising stakes as they near the dangerously bright crash site.
Summary
As the commandeered ship speeds back toward Beacon, Elegy—newly named and captive—watches Nomad’s recent fight and hungers for his precision. She contrasts the Charred’s blunt fury with Nomad’s spear-like control, deciding she wants that focus. Rebeke recoils from Nomad’s deadly display yet proceeds to assist the heat-stricken passengers.
Zeal establishes radio contact with Confidence. She reports the sun’s advance, a narrow mountain-shadow corridor, two ships beyond repair, eight still functional, and people forced to ride exposed on decks. Zeal promises arrival in a little over thirty minutes with five sunhearts, which Rebeke begins dividing for distribution.
Nomad requests and absorbs one full sunheart, his eyes briefly glowing. Elegy approaches, declaring she wants to kill with Nomad’s mastery. Nomad explains deliberate practice: internalizing stance, grip, and thrust step by step until instinct frees the mind to learn the next layer. He reveals his Investiture and bond once let him survive mistakes and refine his skills across decades.
When Nomad moves to free her, Elegy stops him, admitting she would attack if released. She recognizes that voicing this impulse is progress and commits to learning control. Nomad insists that without choosing control and practice, mere fighting teaches nothing. The ship closes on Beacon’s crash site as the light grows dangerously bright.
