Chapter 38

Overview

In the aftermath of Lacey Locke’s death, the Naturals face physical, emotional, and institutional consequences: Michael is badly injured, Dean withdraws, Genevieve survives but shuts them out, and the FBI restricts the program again. Cassie learns the fuller scope of Lacey’s murders and confronts the painful fact that her aunt’s crimes are connected to, but do not solve, Lorelai’s death.

Cassie chooses to stay with the Naturals despite the trauma, keeping the Rose Red lipstick as a symbol of survival, loss, and unfinished questions. Lia’s guarded support and Michael’s patient confession leave Cassie still uncertain about love and identity, but committed to the team and to finding answers.

Summary

After Lacey Locke’s death, the immediate crisis ends, but the Naturals remain shaken. Michael spends two weeks in the hospital and faces months of rehabilitation, possibly with a permanent limp. Dean is released after two days but withdraws from Cassie, Genevieve Ridgerton survives while refusing contact, Sloane fixates on the improbability of Lacey infiltrating the FBI, and Cassie struggles with the truth that Lacey was her aunt.

The FBI confirms Lacey’s history and crimes. Lacey and Lorelai grew up in an abusive home near Baton Rouge after their mother left, and Lorelai escaped while Lacey did not. Investigators connect Lacey to at least five additional killings that occurred near cases Briggs’s team worked, revealing that Lacey used her FBI access to kill across state lines without appearing to be a serial offender. After Cassie joined the program, Lacey escalated and became fixated on her.

The fallout is severe for the Bureau and the team. At least fourteen people are dead, Genevieve was kidnapped and gravely injured, and the ban on Naturals working active cases is reinstated even more firmly. Director Sterling keeps the teenagers’ names out of the news, leaving the public with only the fact that the killer is dead. Cassie remains haunted by Michael killing Lacey and by the parallel losses of her aunt and mother.

Two weeks later, Cassie sits by the pool wondering whether she can continue. Lia confronts her bluntly, telling Cassie to either leave the program or stop moping and commit to staying. Lia also urges Cassie to throw away the Rose Red lipstick she still carries, which Cassie now knows was tied to Lorelai, Lacey, and Lacey’s victim keepsakes. Cassie decides she is staying in the program but keeping the lipstick as a reminder of what happened, what she survived, and the still-unsolved murder of her mother.

Lia admits, in her own abrasive way, that she does not want Cassie to leave. After Lia goes inside, Cassie reflects that everyone in the house carries damage: Dean as a serial killer’s son, Michael as the person who killed Lacey, and Cassie as someone still trapped by the memory of her mother’s bloody dressing room and the safe house. Michael then appears on crutches, against medical advice, and gently raises the subject of their kiss.

Michael tells Cassie that jealousy of Dean helped him briefly believe her false story, but he still came after Cassie and always will. He acknowledges that Cassie and Dean have something unresolved, says Cassie has time to figure out what she wants, and makes clear that he intends to wait. Cassie realizes that while she can read other people easily, her own grief, desires, and future remain uncertain; still, she knows that staying with the Naturals will help her discover who she is and, someday, the truth about her mother.
