Chapter 5

Overview

Cassie commits to Agent Briggs’s program after her father signs the paperwork, quitting her job and preparing to leave her grandmother’s home. Her decision forces Cassie to confront the gap between being loved by the Battaglia family and feeling that Cassie truly belongs with them.

The family resists Cassie’s departure, but Cassie frames the choice as something Cassie must do for her murdered mother. Nonna’s final command that Cassie return for Christmas turns the conflict into a painful but loving acceptance rather than a permanent break.

Summary

Cassie gives Agent Briggs permission to contact her father, and within a week Briggs secures the necessary approvals for Cassie to enter the program. Once the paperwork is complete, Cassie quits her diner job, showers, and prepares to tell Nonna, knowing the conversation will be painful.

Before facing Nonna, Cassie reflects on why Cassie has already decided to leave. Cassie loves her grandmother and knows her father’s family tried to make Cassie feel wanted, but Cassie has never fully felt that Cassie belongs with them. Cassie remains emotionally trapped in the theater where Cassie saw the aftermath of her mother’s murder, and Briggs’s program offers Cassie a way to become someone who can catch killers and prevent other children from suffering as Cassie did.

Cassie tells Nonna that Cassie quit her job because of an opportunity at a special program. Cassie uses Briggs’s cover story and gives Nonna a pamphlet that avoids mentioning profiling, serial killers, or the FBI. When Nonna learns that Cassie’s father has already signed the papers and that Cassie is going, Nonna erupts in furious Italian.

The next day, Nonna gathers the Battaglia family for an intervention. Relatives yell, cry, feed Cassie, threaten Cassie, and plead with Cassie, but Cassie cannot bend to their wishes or pretend this time. When an aunt asks whether Cassie is unhappy, Cassie cannot fully answer, and the family finally realizes that Cassie has always felt like an outsider despite being loved by them.

Cassie says Cassie needs to go for Cassie’s mother, revealing more of the truth than Cassie intended. Nonna challenges whether Cassie’s mother would really want Cassie to leave a loving family, and Cassie answers yes. Cassie announces Cassie will leave in three days and hopes to return for Christmas; Nonna responds by ordering Cassie to come home for Christmas, making clear that Nonna is angry but still claims Cassie as family.
