Chapter 18
Overview
Michael catches Cassie alone at the pool and, after pushing past his usual deflection, reveals darker pieces of his past: violence, wealth, family neglect, and a messy history with Lia. A playful moment between Cassie and Michael is interrupted by Dean, sharpening the tension among the three of them.
Michael's kiss leaves Cassie emotionally confused and makes Lia's earlier dare feel like the beginning of a problem Cassie cannot easily profile or control. Cassie tries to redirect herself away from romantic complications and back toward the case work that brought her to Quantico.
Summary
That night, Cassie sneaks out for a midnight swim, expecting solitude or perhaps Dean, but Michael joins her instead. Michael immediately reads Cassie's irritation and points out that she likes Quantico, Agent Locke's lessons, and the possibility of helping with real cases. Cassie profiles Michael in return, saying he avoids being known and does not want her to know him.
Michael unexpectedly chooses "truth" and offers to answer anything. Cassie asks why Michael resists being profiled and what he fears others will discover. Michael admits that shortly before coming to the program, he badly beat someone in a fight and kept hitting him after he was down, comparing that loss of control to his father. He also reveals that his family is very wealthy but emotionally indifferent, and that he and Lia have had an unhealthy on-again, off-again relationship.
To escape the discomfort of Michael's honesty, Cassie cannonballs into the pool, and the moment turns playful as Cassie and Michael splash and wrestle. Dean appears on the patio and sees them together. Michael challenges Dean, but Dean says there is no problem and leaves politely, making Cassie feel as if she has intruded on something private Dean had shared with her at the pool.
After Dean leaves, Michael resumes the truth-or-dare dynamic and asks Cassie whether she would have kissed Michael if Lia had dared her instead of Dean. Cassie insists it was just a game, but Michael kisses her lightly and reads her reaction, saying that was all Michael needed to know. The kiss leaves Cassie unsettled and confused about both Michael and Dean.
The next morning, exhausted and irritable, Cassie blames Lia for the lack of ice cream and, more importantly, for starting the chain of events by daring Cassie to kiss Dean. Lia notices Cassie's reaction and grows curious, but Cassie refuses to share. Cassie decides to avoid the emotional mess by focusing on the prison interview binders and the work she came to Quantico to do.
