Chapter 37

Overview

Locke reveals herself as Lacey Hobbes, Lorelai’s younger sister and Cassie’s aunt, whose murders grew from rage over Lorelai abandoning her to their abusive father. Cassie learns that Lacey did not kill Lorelai but wanted to, and that Lacey joined the FBI partly to find the person who took that revenge from her.

As Lacey prepares to kill Cassie and frame Dean, Cassie deliberately distracts her with a fabricated confession. The delay lets the wounded Michael reach his gun and shoot Lacey dead, ending the immediate threat.

Summary

After stabbing Genevieve, Locke kicks the dying girl aside and turns the knife on Cassie. Locke rages that Cassie was supposed to kill Genevieve, then slips into memories and briefly confuses Cassie with Lorelai, giving Cassie a chance to stall.

Locke reveals that Lorelai was her older sister and Cassie’s mother. As children, Lorelai tried to draw their abusive father’s violence onto herself to protect Locke, but Lorelai left at eighteen after becoming pregnant with Cassie. Locke begged to come along, but Lorelai refused, leaving Locke to suffer alone.

Locke explains that she first dreamed of reuniting with Lorelai and Cassie, then of punishing Lorelai for abandoning her. By the time Locke found them, Lorelai was already dead, and Cassie had been sent to live elsewhere. Locke says she killed a red-haired woman in Colorado as a substitute for Lorelai, discovering the pleasure that drove her later murders.

Cassie realizes Locke joined the FBI not because she mourned Lorelai, but because she wanted to find Lorelai’s killer and had been denied the chance to kill Lorelai herself. Locke admits she changed her name, passed every test, fooled Briggs and the Naturals, and used her position as cover. While Locke talks, Cassie notices that Michael is alive and dragging himself toward his gun.

To keep Locke’s attention on Cassie, Cassie pretends she killed Lorelai and describes a false murder in brutal detail. Locke is briefly captivated, but then sees through the performance and declares that Cassie is not a killer. Locke also reveals her plan to frame Dean: she will claim Dean kidnapped Cassie and Genevieve, shot Michael, murdered Cassie, and was killed by Locke in self-defense.

Cassie drops the act and admits that she never expected Locke to believe her; Cassie only needed Locke to keep listening. Behind Locke, Michael has reached the gun and aims. Michael fires several shots, and Lacey Hobbes, formerly Agent Locke and Cassie’s aunt, falls dead beside Genevieve.
