Chapter 36
Overview
Agent Locke fully reveals herself as the UNSUB, incapacitating Dean, leaving Michael gravely wounded, and forcing Cassie under her control. Locke exposes that she engineered Cassie’s recruitment because of Cassie’s connection to Lorelai and because Locke sees Cassie as a potential heir to her own violence.
The chapter shifts the danger from investigation to direct captivity, with Cassie realizing her assumptions blinded her to a female killer. Locke’s attempt to make Cassie murder Genevieve fails, and Locke’s rage culminates in Genevieve being stabbed.
Summary
After shooting Michael, Agent Locke advances on Cassie and Dean while Cassie struggles to believe the betrayal is real. Dean warns Cassie to stay back and aims at Locke, but Locke taunts Dean about his fear of becoming like his serial-killer father. Dean fires too late; Locke knocks the shot aside, strikes Dean unconscious, and leaves both Dean and Michael bleeding on the floor.
Locke turns on Cassie, punishing Cassie for letting Michael follow them to the safe house. Locke beats Cassie and orders Cassie to obey, speaking with a cold, almost maternal cruelty. Cassie realizes Locke knows Cassie’s mother, Lorelai, and that Locke’s words sound like abuse once directed at Locke herself.
As Locke’s behavior shifts between familiar warmth and violence, Cassie rethinks her assumptions about the UNSUB. Cassie understands that Locke had nearly told Cassie the truth before: the killer is a woman, and the murders were not driven by the motives Cassie had assumed. Locke leaves briefly and threatens to cripple Cassie and kill Dean if Cassie moves.
Locke returns with Genevieve Ridgerton, badly beaten and cut. Locke reveals that the one thing she is a Natural at is torture, mutilation, and murder. She admits she knew Cassie was Lorelai’s daughter, flagged Cassie in the system, manipulated Briggs into recruiting Cassie, and brought Cassie into the program because Locke saw Cassie as belonging to her.
Locke offers Cassie a knife and presents Genevieve as a gift, wanting Cassie to kill Genevieve and become Locke’s protégé. Cassie pretends to understand Locke’s need for control in order to lower Locke’s guard, then whispers to Genevieve that Cassie will not hurt her. Genevieve instead begs Cassie to kill her before Locke can.
Genevieve’s plea enrages Locke, who attacks Genevieve for touching Cassie and taking control away from Locke. When Locke decides Cassie cannot do what Locke wants, Locke rips the knife back from Cassie and stabs Genevieve in the side, leaving Cassie horrified and Genevieve bleeding.
