Chapter 21
Overview
After Dean and Lia's rejection leaves Cassie shaken, Michael steps in with emotional insight, irreverent humor, and a destructive basement distraction. The chapter shifts Cassie's focus from Dean's secrets to a new potential lead when Sloane reveals she stole a USB drive from Locke's briefcase.
The discovery raises the stakes because the Naturals may now have unauthorized access to information about Briggs and Locke's active investigation, tempting Cassie back toward the case despite recent emotional turmoil.
Summary
Cassie returns downstairs upset after confronting Dean about his father, Daniel Redding. Cassie regrets pushing Dean, recognizes that Dean had a right to keep secrets, and feels wounded by both Dean and Lia.
Michael finds Cassie near the front door and reads Cassie's emotions with blunt accuracy: confusion, loneliness, anger, and self-reproach. When Cassie asks why Michael did not simply tell her the truth about Dean's father, Michael admits Cassie would have resented hearing it from him because of Michael's rivalry with Dean. Michael briefly reveals insecurity about his own moral standing, then covers it with sarcasm.
To distract Cassie, Michael leads Cassie to the basement training area, where the two set off fireworks in the fake crime-scene foyer. The destruction helps Cassie feel better, though Cassie notes that this is not what Briggs intended for the simulations.
Sloane enters the basement, catches them using fireworks, and initially scolds Michael and Cassie for misusing the crime sets. Instead of stopping them, Sloane corrects their technique with a lecture on pyrodynamics, and the group creates several more explosions.
Afterward, Cassie mentions that Briggs and Locke are busy working a case. Michael notices Sloane's guilty expression at Locke's name and presses Sloane until Sloane admits taking a USB drive from Locke's briefcase. Michael and Cassie immediately infer that the drive may contain information about Briggs and Locke's current case, and Michael asks whether Cassie still wants a distraction.
