Chapter 10
Overview
Cassie begins to question whether her instinctive readings of people are imagination or real profiling, especially after analyzing Lia. A casual breakfast reveals the Naturals' frustration with being studied and controlled by the FBI rather than trusted in the field.
Agent Locke distinguishes herself from Briggs by acknowledging that Michael and Lia were strong-armed into the program, deepening Cassie's understanding of the group's tensions. The chapter ends with Dean arriving to conduct Cassie's first lesson, despite his clear discomfort with her.
Summary
The morning after mentally simulating Lia, Cassie feels uneasy around her. The profiling game Cassie once played with strangers had always seemed imaginary, but after learning about behavioral personality evidence, Cassie wonders whether her guesses about Lia came from imagination or real subconscious profiling.
In the kitchen, Judd leaves for a grocery run and Cassie fixates on her cereal while thinking through Lia's behavior. Michael notices Cassie's profiling expression and teases her for it, accurately describing her facial and body cues. Their joking turns flirtatious until Lia enters, deliberately interrupting them while wearing silk pajamas and pearls.
Lia and Michael describe the Naturals program from their perspective. Michael says his early training involved watching foreign-language films without subtitles to study emotion through posture, expression, and cultural cues. Lia complains that despite her talent for detecting lies, she has not been allowed into the field or to interview psychopaths directly.
Michael explains that the FBI mostly gives the Naturals tapes, transcripts, cold cases, and solved cases meant to test their abilities. Lia adds that even when the Naturals produce the right answers, the Bureau wants explanations for how they do it. Michael concludes that the FBI wants not only to train and use them, but to understand and replicate their abilities.
Agent Locke enters, jokes with Michael and Lia, and assigns them files from Briggs's study while saying she will begin training Cassie. Locke's presence quiets the other teens, who leave quickly. Alone with Cassie, Locke explains that Michael and Lia were not given much choice about joining the program, unlike Cassie, and that Briggs's forceful methods have left them resentful.
Dean arrives at the kitchen doorway, visibly unhappy and unfriendly toward Cassie. Locke reveals that Dean's arrival is intentional, and Dean confirms that he is there for Cassie's first lesson, setting up Cassie's formal entry into profiler training.
