Chapter 34

Overview

Cassie learns from Agent Locke that the FBI may have a leak and that the protection detail around the Naturals could be compromised. Locke orders Cassie to escape with Dean, forcing Cassie to wound Michael emotionally to keep him from getting involved.

Dean proves himself calm and capable by retrieving a gun from Briggs’s safe and leading Cassie out through hidden parts of the house toward a DC safe house. The killer’s perspective confirms that Cassie is the center of the UNSUB’s obsession and that a mistake has made the killer more desperate and dangerous.

Summary

After the team realizes the killer may have access to their house or FBI information, Cassie tries to contact Agent Briggs but gets no answer. Using Dean’s phone, she reaches Agent Locke instead. Agent Starmans remains posted nearby, so Locke quickly recognizes that Cassie cannot speak freely and instructs Cassie to pretend the call is routine, go to the bathroom, and call back privately.

Once alone with the faucet running to cover her voice, Cassie explains what the team has discovered. Locke tells Cassie that Briggs is meeting with Director Sterling because the FBI suspects a leak inside their unit. Since Cassie’s protection detail may be compromised, Locke orders Cassie to leave the house quietly, without alerting the agents or the other Naturals.

Locke warns Cassie to stay calm because Michael will be able to read panic, and Locke specifically worries that Michael might try to play hero. Cassie wants to keep Michael safe, so when Michael comes to the bathroom door, Cassie deliberately hurts him by making him think she cannot deal with him or their kiss. Michael retreats behind his emotional masks, and Cassie uses the moment to go to Dean instead.

Cassie tells Dean that Locke wants her out and that Dean should access the safe in Briggs’s study. Dean immediately helps without demanding explanations. When Locke sends the safe-house location to Dean’s phone, Dean reveals a hidden, unsafe back staircase known only to him and Judd, gives Cassie a sweatshirt because she is shaking and cold, and leads Cassie down to the study.

In Briggs’s study, Dean opens the safe, asks whether Cassie can shoot, and takes a loaded gun when Cassie says she cannot. Dean and Cassie then slip through the house to the basement and leave for the DC safe house. In a final shift to the killer’s point of view, the UNSUB berates themself for making a mistake, remembers an abusive childhood voice, and resolves that Cassie will belong to them either through love or death.
