Overview

Three Shattered Souls follows a fractured band of fugitives carrying legendary Dragon Lord relics through a realm on the edge of war. Sora, a former poison maiden driven by grief and loyalty, travels with Aeri, a hidden princess bound to dangerous powers; Royo, Aeri’s fierce protector; Mikail, the last heir of conquered Gaya; and allies whose loyalties are never simple.

As rival kings, colonial governors, spies, and ambitious nobles maneuver for control, the group must decide whether relics that promise salvation are worth their terrible costs. The story centers on liberation, vengeance, sacrifice, trust after betrayal, and the struggle to build a better future without becoming what must be overthrown.

Plot Summary ⚠️ Spoilers

After escaping Khitan with several Dragon Lord relics, Royo, Aeri, Sora, Mikail, Fallador, and Gambria regroup on Gaya amid grief for Prince Euyn and distrust over Aeri’s secrecy. Fallador and Gambria reveal that Mikail is the true surviving Miat heir, protected by a Gayan child-swap tradition, and Mikail quickly turns toward reclaiming Jeul from Governor Yong. Their first attempts to hide fail: Yusanian soldiers raid their inn, and although Mikail and Fallador kill the attackers, the incident exposes how dangerous every ally and stranger has become.

Elsewhere, Tiyung and Hana travel back toward Yusan through the Khakatan Mountains. Tiyung is haunted by Idle Prison, by Ailor’s sacrifice in impersonating him, and by his father Seok’s seizure of power. Hana reveals that she faked her death and still loves Sora, though she doubts she deserves forgiveness. Rumors soon confirm that King Joon is believed dead and Seok has taken the throne, while armies and fleets begin moving across the realm.

Mikail’s group flees to Cetil and discovers his father’s home burned and marked traitor. Mikail believes Ailor was taken, while Sora learns Daysum is dead and that Mikail withheld the truth from her. Aeri begins suffering alarming time-freezes from using the Golden Ring and Sands of Time together. News bells announce the king’s death, and the group seeks Count Rune in Rahway to understand the succession crisis and gain support against Seok.

Rune confirms Seok has seized Yusan’s throne and proposes himself as the answer: he will help depose Seok if Aeri marries him and supports his claim. His hospitality is laced with threat. Sora recognizes Rune’s new courtesan Misha as Sun-ye, a fellow poison maiden sent by Seok to assassinate Rune. Their confrontation becomes a tentative alliance when Sun-ye reveals Seok’s coercion and later warns Sora that Rune intends to trap the group for the relics. Mikail exposes Gambria’s betrayal after learning she leaked information to Quilimar, and he banishes her rather than kill her.

With Rune increasingly dangerous, Sora engineers an escape from Rahway with Misha’s help. Aeri, Royo, Mikail, and Sora sail for Gaya, survive cirena song, and reach Hallan. There, in the burned Sacred Woods, they find the hidden Temple of Knowledge. Braya, the temple keeper, recognizes Mikail as Adoros Miat, Aeri as Naerium, Sora as Athora Inigo, and Royo as the son of a temple keeper. Research reveals little about combining relics except myths of godlike power and destruction, but Braya tells Mikail that Jeul is underdefended and urges him to give Gaya something to believe in.

Mikail infiltrates Jeul with Aeri, Sora, and Royo, publicly declares himself Adoros Miat, and uses the Water Scepter to drown Governor Yong and his guards. He conjures snow over the city, inspiring the people, and Gayan rebels rally to him. At that moment Tiyung and Hana, long presumed dead by Sora, arrive in Jeul. Their survival brings painful revelations: Ailor loved Mikail, Hana once worked through Rune, King Joon may still live, and Weian ships allied with Yusan and Khitan are moving toward war.

Mikail consolidates rule in the Rose Palace, but assassination and betrayal continue. He executes poisoners, sends Hana away because he cannot trust her, and accepts Rune’s military terms under pressure. The group plans a night raid on King Joon’s flagship to seize the Flaming Sword and Immortal Crown before a larger war reaches Gaya. During the raid, the strike team walks into an ambush. Fremo is killed, Teo is wounded, and Calier betrays Mikail. Hana, revealed aboard Joon’s ship, seizes the Immortal Crown from Joon, allowing Mikail to behead him. Aeri uses her relics to kill attackers, but Hana is fatally stabbed and dies calling for Sora.

After Joon’s death, Aeri stops breathing until Mikail places the Immortal Crown on her, reviving her and fusing it to her. Mikail bonds with the Water Scepter and Flaming Sword, burns Joon’s ship, and returns to Jeul, only to learn that Sora and Tiyung were abducted by Seok’s agents. On a Qali ship, Sora despairs until she sees unnatural fires and realizes Mikail has likely killed Joon and claimed the sword. Seok brings Sora and Tiyung before him, unstable and cruel, then keeps Sora as leverage and takes both aboard his flagship for the assault on Gaya.

At Charm Beach, Gaya, Rune’s forces, and Weian and Yusanian armies converge. Mikail uses the fused relics to incinerate Weian ships and soldiers, but the toll turns water against him, slowly drowning him from within. Aeri takes command when his strength fails, yet Weian troops land and carve through the defenses. Mikail asks Aeri to kill him so she can take his relics and become the Dragon Lord, but Royo devises a different plan: stop Mikail’s heart, sever the relic bonds, and revive him.

Royo drowns Mikail in a bowl, and Mikail briefly reaches the Road of Souls, where Euyn urges him to return. Royo revives him, freeing the Water Scepter and Flaming Sword. Aeri accepts all the relics and ascends, merging with the Dragon Lord. Rather than destroy only enemies, she asks to save everyone and to end the relics themselves. Riding a samroc, she forces mass surrender, drops Seok behind Gayan lines, frees Sora from chains, forges those chains into a ruby crown, and names Sora the Dragon Queen of Yusan. Aeri vanishes after bidding Royo farewell, leaving him shattered.

One week later, Sora descends into Idle Prison to face Seok. She rejects torture and empty vengeance, ordering him walled in alive instead and choosing to erase his legacy through reform. At her coronation, she takes the throne in simple dress as the first Dragon Queen, with Mikail, Royo, Tiyung, Fallador, Gambria, Sun-ye, and Rayna present. Two years later, peace holds under Sora’s rule and Mikail reigns in Gaya, but Royo works in Yusan’s Temple of Knowledge, unable to let Aeri go. He studies forbidden lore about the Ten Hells, determined to find a way to bring her back.

Characters

  • Sora Inigo
A former poison maiden whose grief over Daysum and love for her friends drive much of the story’s action. She moves from vengeance against Seok to accepting Aeri’s charge to become Yusan’s first Dragon Queen and reform the realm.
  • Aeri
Joon’s daughter, also known as Princess Naerium, and the bearer of the Golden Ring, Sands of Time, and eventually the Immortal Crown. Her struggle with the relics’ costs culminates in her merging with the Dragon Lord to stop the war and crown Sora.
  • Royo
A fierce fighter and protector whose love for Aeri shapes his choices throughout the book. He repeatedly saves or steadies her, revives Mikail during the final battle, and ends the story seeking a way to restore Aeri.
  • Mikail
The hidden Gayan prince Adoros Miat, wielder of the Water Scepter and later the Flaming Sword. He reclaims Jeul, declares Gaya independent, and struggles to balance vengeance, rule, sacrifice, and loyalty to his chosen family.
  • Tiyung
Seok’s son, presumed dead after Idle Prison, who survives with Hana’s help and returns to Sora. His moral objections repeatedly challenge cycles of vengeance, and his presence beside Sora helps signal reconciliation after Seok’s fall.
  • Hana
A poison maiden once known as Zahara who faked her death and lives through shifting alliances with Seok, Rune, and Sora’s enemies. Her final betrayal of King Joon saves Aeri and Mikail, though she dies before reconciling fully with Sora.
  • King Seok
Tiyung’s father and Yusan’s usurping ruler, whose cruelty toward poison maidens and political enemies makes him Sora’s central personal enemy. He abducts Sora and Tiyung as leverage before Aeri’s intervention ends his power.
  • King Joon
Aeri’s abusive father and a rival ruler tied to the Immortal Crown and Flaming Sword. His survival, alliance with Wei, and possession of relics force the night raid that ends with his death.
  • Count Rune
The western count who offers aid only when it serves his own bid for Yusan’s throne. He manipulates spies, proposes marriage to Aeri, later backs Gaya militarily, and remains distrusted even after the realm stabilizes.
  • Fallador
The swapped commoner once believed to be a Gayan royal, bound by long history to Mikail and Gambria. His dealings with Rune and uncertain loyalties make him both useful envoy and suspected betrayer.
  • Gambria
A former companion whose love for Quilimar divides her loyalties and leads her to leak the group’s location. Though banished by Mikail, she later appears in Seok’s court and covertly helps Sora by giving her a blade.
  • Prince Euyn
Mikail’s lost love whose death haunts Mikail throughout the book. On the Road of Souls, Euyn urges Mikail to return to life and complete his work.
  • Ailor
Mikail’s father, who sacrifices himself by impersonating Tiyung in Idle Prison. His love and final message help shape Mikail’s grief, identity, and resolve.
  • Daysum
Sora’s sister, whose death becomes the emotional center of Sora’s rage against Seok. Her memory later helps Sora reject torture and choose a different kind of justice.
  • Sun-ye
A poison maiden using the alias Misha while serving as Rune’s courtesan and Seok’s assassin. Her uneasy alliance with Sora reveals key intelligence and leads Sora to promise freedom for Rayna.
  • Rayna
Sun-ye’s twin sister, held under Seok’s control as leverage. Sora’s vow to spare and free Rayna becomes part of her break from Seok’s system.
  • Queen Olivia
Tiyung’s mother and Seok’s queen, whose warnings and coded support keep Tiyung alive. Her position reveals the danger inside Qali Palace and the instability of Seok’s rule.
  • Braya
Keeper of Gaya’s Temple of Knowledge, who recognizes the group’s true identities and grants sanctuary. She protects their access to knowledge and urges Mikail to reclaim Jeul.
  • Ronlo
A priest of the Gayan Temple of Knowledge who exposes the group’s bounty and demands they leave. Braya expels him for breaking temple vows, forcing the group to move quickly.
  • Governor Yong
Yusan’s colonial governor in Jeul and Mikail’s first major target in reclaiming Gaya. Mikail drowns him publicly to announce the return of Adoros Miat.
  • Fremo
The Gayan groundskeeper who first signals local support for Mikail and later leads rebels to his side. He dies during the raid on Joon’s ship, leaving Duval to help carry the rebellion forward.
  • Teo
A Gayan palace guard from Hallan who pledges loyalty to Mikail. He serves as guard and fighter through the liberation of Jeul, the raid on Joon’s ship, and the defense of Gaya.
  • Calier
Teo’s brother and a Gayan guard who initially swears fealty to Mikail. He betrays Mikail during the confrontation with Joon and is killed by Aeri’s relic power.
  • Duval
A young Gayan rebel who survives the disastrous raid on Joon’s ship. After Fremo’s death, he becomes an important local supporter during the defense of Gaya.
  • Wan
Head of the Rose Palace household who aids the night raid by providing and holding the rowboat for extraction. His support helps the survivors escape Joon’s burning warship.
  • Quilimar
Khitan’s queen and Gambria’s former love, whose survival and political position pull at Gambria’s loyalties. Messages intended for her help expose Gambria’s betrayal.
  • General Vikal
A Khitan military leader reported alive amid the shifting alliances. After Aeri destroys the relics, Vikal returns to Khitan under the new peace.
  • Prince Uolson of Wei
The Weian prince who allies with Seok after upheaval in Wei. His forces bring elite Weian soldiers and steel warships into the assault on Gaya.
  • Priest King Uol
Wei’s dead priest king, whose fall destabilizes Wei and helps set Prince Uolson’s course. His death is part of the wider geopolitical collapse surrounding the relic war.
  • Dragon Lord
The divine presence tied to the relics, heard by Aeri before fully merging with her at Charm Beach. Through Aeri, the Dragon Lord ends the battle, destroys the relics, and transfers Yusan’s crown to Sora.
  • Samroc
A mythic black bird with steel-like feathers that carries Aeri in divine form. It captures Seok from his flagship and drops him behind Gayan lines, ending his command.
  • High priest of the Divine Temple of Kings
The religious figure who conducts Sora’s coronation. His proclamation formalizes her as Yusan’s first Dragon Queen.
  • Madame Iseul
The former handler who trained and dosed the poison maidens. Her methods explain the fear, myths, and control Seok used over Sora, Hana, Sun-ye, and others.
  • Nayo
Sora and Hana’s fellow victim of Seok’s poison-maiden system. News of his safety reaches Hana and shapes the survivors’ sense of what can still be saved.
  • Lyria
Gambria’s wife in Khitan, one of the ties pulling Gambria away from Mikail’s cause. Mikail cites her when probing Gambria’s divided loyalties.
  • King Theum
A historical Yusan king whose erasure of queens from temple records reveals how Yusan suppressed women’s rule. His actions help Sora and Aeri understand the political weight of a queen’s claim.
  • Prince Omin
The prince from whom Aeri stole the Sands of Time when she was twelve. That theft explains her altered age, the embedded gem at her collarbone, and her long connection to time magic.
  • Brookson Veil
A past assassination target Sora killed for Seok. Her memory of that mission underscores Seok’s control over her and fuels her hatred of him.
  • Geon
A palace guard serving Seok who takes part in Sora and Tiyung’s capture and is later ordered to execute Sora. His role shows Seok’s continued reach over loyal military forces.
  • Beom
A younger guard who once served with Tiyung and shows him small kindness during his forced escort. His presence contrasts with the brutality of Seok’s command.
  • Yulia
A Rose Palace chambermaid whom Mikail threatens while searching for Sora and Tiyung. Aeri’s intervention during that scene forces Mikail to confront the kind of ruler he is becoming.

Themes

Three Shattered Souls is driven by the question of what survives after kingdoms, families, and selves have been broken. Mai Corland’s finale turns political fantasy into an inquiry about grief, power, and the cost of remaking a world.

  • Power as both liberation and corruption. The Dragon Lord relics promise salvation but exact terrible prices. Mikail uses the Water Scepter to reclaim Jeul and defend Charm Beach, yet each display leaves him convulsing, drowning from within, and tempted toward cruelty. Aeri’s relics likewise save lives—turning assassins’ hearts to gold, reviving through the Immortal Crown—but push her toward dissociation and finally divine sacrifice. The book repeatedly asks whether power can free the oppressed without consuming the liberator.
  • Vengeance versus justice. Sora’s arc centers on the difference between killing Seok and destroying what he represents. Daysum’s death makes revenge feel like her only purpose, and she enters Idle Prison prepared with whip, knife, and poison. Yet her choice to wall Seok away rather than perform his cruelty marks a moral turning point: justice becomes not imitation, but refusal. Mikail faces a similar struggle as he executes traitors and dreams of Tamneki burning, only gradually accepting restraint as part of rulership.
  • Identity reclaimed from false histories. Hidden heirs, erased queens, swapped children, and censored temple records reveal that empire survives by controlling memory. Mikail’s declaration as Adoros Miat, Sora’s coronation in a commoner’s dress, and Aeri’s insistence on the name “Aeri” all reject identities imposed by kings, fathers, and systems of ownership.
  • Love as sacrifice and tether. Romantic and chosen-family bonds repeatedly keep characters from annihilation. Royo brings Mikail back from death; Euyn sends Mikail back from the Road of Souls; Aeri gives up an ordinary future with Royo to save enemies as well as friends. The epilogue’s Royo, still searching for Aeri, shows that love does not end neatly with victory.
  • Rebuilding after trauma. The shattered souls do not become whole by forgetting. Sora’s reign, Gaya’s independence, and the restored temples suggest healing is collective: peace is built from memory, mercy, and the courage to imagine a future not ruled by fear.
