7. Big Shocker: I Offend a Goddess
Overview
Percy, Annabeth, and Grover’s questioning of Hebe quickly collapses when the goddess realizes they are investigating her for Ganymede’s missing chalice. Hebe reveals that her arcade uses nostalgia to reverse aging, making the place more unsettling than it first appeared.
Although Hebe denies wanting the chalice or her old cupbearer job back, Percy’s attempt to keep the inquiry going offends her. Her wrath turns the investigation into immediate danger, shifting the quest from polite questioning to divine punishment.
Summary
Percy is overwhelmed by the smell of Hebe Jeebies’s greasy pizza, which throws him back into memories of third-grade school lunches. Hebe interprets Percy’s reaction as proof that her arcade’s nostalgia is wonderful, though Percy privately remembers childhood as far from ideal. Grover eagerly eats the pizza, while Annabeth watches the elderly karaoke singers.
Hebe presses Percy about turning down immortality, treating the decision as baffling and almost insulting. Annabeth defends Percy by reminding Hebe that Percy’s choice helped secure recognition for the gods’ demigod children. Percy tries to answer carefully about aging, but Grover interrupts when he notices the karaoke singers are subtly becoming younger.
Hebe explains that nostalgia is a doorway back to youth and that her arcade attractions and rewards can shave years off visitors’ ages. Annabeth notices that no one in the arcade appears younger than about eight, and Hebe admits she cannot stand being out-younged. Hebe assumes Percy, Annabeth, and Grover want youth restored, but Percy refuses and says that is not why they came.
Annabeth and Grover cautiously ask about Ganymede, but Grover’s awkward mention gives away their purpose. Hebe quickly deduces that Ganymede has lost the chalice of the gods. At first she is delighted by Ganymede’s trouble, but her mood changes when she realizes the trio came to investigate her as a possible thief.
Hebe furiously denies stealing the chalice and says she has no interest in returning to her former role as cupbearer on Olympus when she already has her own arcade. Percy tries to calm the situation by asking whether Hebe might know another suspect or allow them to search the premises, but Hebe takes further offense. In anger, Hebe declares that Percy should start growing up all over again and erupts into a storm of rainbow glitter that knocks Percy from his chair.
