9. The Chickens Draw First Blood
Overview
Percy, Annabeth, and Grover flee Hebe’s sacred killer hens through the arcade, using quick teamwork and Annabeth’s strategy to survive despite being trapped in child bodies. Annabeth identifies the chicks and the karaoke bar as possible leverage tied to Hebe’s rituals, shifting the crisis from pure escape to an attempted apology and plea for sanctuary. The chapter raises the stakes by leaving the trio barricaded from the attacking flock with only an uncertain ritual—and one vicious baby chicken—as their hope.
Summary
The unleashed hens charge through Hebe Jeebies, tearing up the arcade and chasing the de-aged Percy, Annabeth, and Grover. Because Percy’s eight-year-old body cannot outrun them, Annabeth directs the group to drag a café table into a plastic play structure and use it to block the entrance, buying them a brief refuge.
Inside the tubes, the trio discusses why Hebe uses chickens: Grover explains that hens and chicks were sacred in Hebe’s temples. Grover tries speaking to the birds, but the hens only attack harder. Annabeth realizes the chicks may be the key and decides they must get to the coop, steal one, and reach the karaoke bar, which functions as Hebe’s inner sanctum.
At a junction in the play structure, Annabeth sends Grover left to distract the flock while Percy and Annabeth go right toward the coop. Grover runs across the arcade, insulting the hens and throwing Skee-Balls behind him to slow them, while Annabeth reminds Percy not to hurt Hebe’s sacred animals because angering Hebe further could ruin their chance of survival.
Percy and Annabeth reach the coop, where the barrier has allowed adult hens out but kept the chicks inside. Annabeth reaches for a chick with pink fluff on her face, but the chick bites her finger and refuses to let go. Annabeth carries the chick, whom Percy thinks of as Li’l Killer, while Percy and Annabeth race to the karaoke bar to meet Grover.
Grover arrives at the karaoke bar battered and feather-covered, and the trio shuts the mahogany doors just before the flock crashes into them. Annabeth releases Li’l Killer, treats her bleeding finger with a napkin, and explains the next step: because petitioners once sought forgiveness and sanctuary at Hebe’s altar, they must find an apology song, summon Hebe, and beg for a second chance. If Hebe refuses, Annabeth hopes the captured chick can somehow help; otherwise, they are trapped and likely doomed.
