35. Pretty Much the Best Good-Night Kiss Ever
Overview
Percy tells Annabeth about Olympus, Athena’s unexpected help, and Percy’s realization while facing Geras that growing old is worthwhile if Annabeth is part of that future. Annabeth interprets Athena’s help as a sign that Athena understands the seriousness of their relationship.
The chapter shifts from quest aftermath to emotional reaffirmation: Percy and Annabeth acknowledge their love, while Annabeth keeps Percy focused on the two remaining recommendation quests. Percy ends the day hopeful, comforted by Annabeth and the possibility of their shared future.
Summary
That night, after dinner and some homework, Percy uses a makeshift Iris-message to call Annabeth in her dorm. Annabeth appears in rainbow light with a math textbook, and Percy begins telling her the full story of his day on Olympus.
Annabeth is amused and pleased by Barbara’s request for a selfie and autograph. Percy also thanks Annabeth for lending him the Yankees cap and mentions that Annabeth never told him invisibility makes her uncomfortable. Annabeth explains that all power has a price, including invisibility, and says Athena taught her that lesson.
Percy then tells Annabeth about Athena silently helping him during the brunch. Annabeth realizes Athena may have helped Percy because Athena finally understands how serious Annabeth is about Percy and about their future together. Percy connects this to his choice during the struggle with Geras, when Percy accepted aging because a future with Annabeth was worth growing old for.
Annabeth is moved, but she also reminds Percy that he still needs two more divine recommendation letters before winter break. Percy jokes uneasily about the coming quests, and Annabeth reassures Percy that they will make it. Annabeth then tells Percy that Annabeth thinks she loves him, and Percy answers that Percy loves her too.
They say good night in their usual way, rolling toward each other until the Iris-message breaks. Percy imagines Annabeth’s warmth and presence lingering after the rainbow fades, feels hopeful, and falls asleep quickly, having pleasant dreams for once.
