34. I Write the Worst Letter Ever, Delete, Delete
Overview
Percy returns to a comforting family dinner, but Ganymede’s blank recommendation letter turns the evening into a comic writing session. With help from Annabeth, Sally, and Paul, Percy completes the enchanted letter and Ganymede’s signature appears, securing his first divine recommendation. The chapter reinforces Percy’s support system while showing that Ganymede’s burden still troubles him.
Summary
Percy comes home relieved after the Olympus errand, but dinner becomes an unexpected attempt to write Ganymede’s recommendation letter. Annabeth joins Percy, Sally, and Paul for a normal family meal, which Percy badly needs after the morning’s danger. They talk about school, Sally’s upcoming book and its strange early one-star review, and Annabeth’s softened version of the fight with Geras.
Annabeth asks Percy what happened on Olympus, but Percy only says he returned the chalice in time and received Ganymede’s letter. Percy avoids explaining the full experience, signaling that Zeus’s brunch and Ganymede’s situation are still weighing on him. After dinner, Percy shows everyone the letter, which appears blank until he explains that Ganymede expects Percy to write the recommendation himself.
When Percy casually says “Dear Admissions Office,” the magical paper begins transcribing his words in fiery bronze ink. Percy accidentally adds “Well, crap,” then discovers he can erase mistakes by saying “Delete.” This turns the task into a chaotic group exercise as Sally, Paul, and Annabeth offer exaggerated and embarrassing praise for Percy.
Percy filters their jokes into a usable recommendation, keeping the least humiliating lines and adding praise for Eudora’s help. After half an hour, the letter reads well enough, and Percy closes it with “Thank you for your time. Yours sincerely, Ganymede.” Ganymede’s red signature appears, confirming the first recommendation is complete.
Sally notes that Percy still needs two more recommendation letters, while Percy jokes that he will write any future do-it-yourself letters alone. Annabeth reminds him that he is never truly alone because his family and friends will help him. Paul, Sally, and Annabeth toast Percy as their family hero, but Percy cannot join in because toasts still remind him of Ganymede’s unhappy role on Olympus.
