12. Ganymede Gets Me a Refill

Overview

Ganymede interrupts Percy’s brief stretch of normal school life to check on the chalice quest and reinforces the pressure on Percy by tying the outcome to both Ganymede’s reputation and Percy’s college future. Percy confirms that Hebe is probably not the thief and that Iris is the next lead.

Annabeth then changes the plan by arranging for a local child of Iris to introduce them at the farmers’ market. Percy’s dread suggests this helper may complicate the encounter, raising the stakes for the next step of the investigation.

Summary

After three quiet days without supernatural trouble, Percy tries to keep up with school, spends afternoons with Grover and Annabeth, and gets through his first swim meet without revealing his powers. By Friday lunch, Percy has nearly forgotten that the Lincoln Center farmers’ market is the next day.

Ganymede appears in the school cafeteria, dressed like an Olympian but mostly ignored because of the Mist, and refills students’ drinks with a glowing blue beverage. Percy worries it might be nectar, but Ganymede explains it is a harmless Olympian drink that refreshes mortals and tastes like whatever they want.

Ganymede asks for a quest update, and Percy explains what happened with Hebe. Ganymede is unhappy but accepts Percy’s judgment that Hebe probably did not steal the chalice, though she may enjoy seeing Ganymede humiliated at the next feast. Percy outlines the next step: speak to Iris at the farmers’ market, find the chalice, and avoid being turned into rainbows.

That night, Percy talks with Annabeth through an Iris-message because demigods avoid cell phones that attract monsters. Annabeth says she has a plan: instead of approaching Iris cold, the trio should get an introduction from a local child of Iris who lives in Soho.

Percy immediately worries because he recognizes the unnamed daughter of Iris as someone potentially difficult, but Annabeth has already arranged the meeting. Annabeth insists the girl will only introduce them and help soften the accusation that Iris may have stolen the chalice. The message ends when Annabeth’s roommate returns, leaving Percy to face homework and the next day’s uncomfortable meeting.
