3. We Complain about Quests and Decorative Gourds
Overview
Percy tells Annabeth about Poseidon’s requirement that he complete three quests for divine recommendation letters, and Annabeth immediately commits to helping him reach New Rome University. A quiet family dinner at Sally and Paul’s apartment underscores Percy’s desire for normalcy, stability, and a future with Annabeth.
Grover arrives and, after hearing the news, volunteers to join Percy and Annabeth, reuniting the original trio for the coming quests. The chapter shifts the problem from Percy’s private burden into a shared mission, even as Grover’s anxiety hints that the divine requests may not stay quiet for long.
Summary
Percy and Annabeth sit on the fire escape outside Percy’s bedroom after Percy’s first day at Alternative High School. Percy tells Annabeth about his classes, his headaches, and Poseidon’s demand that Percy complete three new divine quests to earn recommendation letters for New Rome University. Annabeth considers whether Athena could help, but Percy explains that the requests must come from the gods themselves.
Annabeth reassures Percy that they will handle the problem together, as they have survived worse challenges. Percy worries that the quests should be his burden alone, but Annabeth insists on helping because she wants Percy to get through high school and join her in college. Percy also notices that Annabeth has avoided talking much about her own first day at the School of Design, New York City, and he feels concerned that his problems are overshadowing hers.
Sally calls Percy and Annabeth inside to help with dinner. In the kitchen, Paul cooks stir-fry while Annabeth helps chop vegetables, and Percy sets the table. Percy reflects on how precious ordinary family rituals feel after years of monsters, quests, and instability, and he appreciates Sally’s happier life with Paul even as he prepares to leave for college.
Grover arrives with a basket of the last strawberries of summer, then joins Sally, Paul, Percy, and Annabeth for dinner. Percy notes Grover’s increasingly wild satyr appearance and reflects on Camp Half-Blood, graduation, and the uncertain transition of demigods into adult life. The group talks about Sally’s upcoming novel and Grover’s work with the Council of Cloven Elders before Percy explains his new requirement for three godly recommendation letters.
Grover briefly panics but quickly volunteers to join Percy and Annabeth on the quests. Percy is deeply relieved, and the three friends joke about team names while Paul urges them to be careful. Grover optimistically claims that the gods may take weeks to send the first request, though his nervous twitch suggests he is less confident than he sounds.
