31. I Face a Dangerous Predator Who Is Possibly My Future Mother-in-Law
Overview
Percy successfully smuggles Zeus’s chalice back to Ganymede by hiding beneath a pastry cart, with Barbara’s help and Athena’s quiet intervention. The quest ends not with glory but with a magical blank recommendation form, reinforcing the comic unfairness of doing dangerous work for gods. Percy leaves Olympus with Ganymede’s letter secured, bringing him one step closer to meeting New Rome University’s requirements.
Summary
Percy hides beneath a pastry cart with Zeus’s chalice, relying on Barbara the dryad server to wheel him close to Ganymede during Zeus’s brunch. Barbara agrees to help in exchange for meeting Annabeth, but warns Percy she will deny knowing him if he is caught.
As Zeus tells a rambling story about his infancy in Crete and llamas, Barbara pushes the cart near the table. Zeus briefly stops the cart, nearly exposing Percy, but resumes his story. Percy sees that Ganymede is close but still blocked by Zeus, making a direct handoff impossible.
Percy then notices Lucius the lion staring at him under the tablecloth. Rhea calms the lion before Lucius can draw too much attention, but Athena spots Percy while looking under the table. Instead of exposing him, Athena silently understands enough of the situation and asks Ganymede to take the pastry cart back to the kitchen for clotted cream.
Zeus reluctantly releases Ganymede, allowing him to wheel the cart away. In the kitchen, Percy emerges and formally hands Ganymede the chalice, completing the quest by putting it back into Ganymede’s possession. Ganymede gratefully gives Percy his recommendation: a magical blank page that will fill itself with Percy’s dictated wording and Ganymede’s signature if Percy does not exaggerate too much.
Ganymede refills the chalice, gathers the clotted cream, and returns to the brunch while pretending the cup had always been in his possession. Percy thanks Barbara and promises the Annabeth meeting, then runs into Chef Naomi, who dryly comments on how unrewarding divine service can be and offers Percy a bag for the road so he can leave her kitchen.
