33. One More Jolly Rancher for Old Times’ Sake

Overview

Percy debriefs with Eudora after securing Ganymede’s recommendation, confirming that he was never tempted by the chalice’s promise of immortality. The chapter reframes the quest as both college-application material and proof of Percy’s maturity, while also reminding him that he still needs two more divine recommendations.

With a blue Jolly Rancher and no sewer travel required, Percy returns to ordinary school life, where homework and exams feel almost manageable compared with Olympian politics.

Summary

As Percy heads down the school hall after Poseidon has covered for his lateness, Eudora opens the counselor’s door and calls him in. Percy follows because a few more minutes late will not matter, and he notices that Eudora has made the office more ocean-themed, including seashells and a sea otter poster.

Eudora excitedly asks about Ganymede’s recommendation letter. Percy explains the recent events and makes clear that Eudora no longer needs to send him anywhere through magical sewer pipes. When Percy mentions Poseidon’s phone call to the school, Eudora becomes nervous that Percy’s father had to intervene, but Percy reassures her that the situation worked out.

Eudora suggests Percy use the adventure as material for his college personal essay, emphasizing bravery, initiative, and self-discovery. She then asks whether Percy was tempted to drink from the chalice. Thinking of Ganymede’s mistreatment by Zeus and the other gods’ contempt for him, Percy says honestly that he was not tempted at all.

Percy shows Eudora the blank recommendation letter. Eudora admires the expensive magical paper and treats the blankness as a minor detail, telling Percy he will add the right words. She also hints that Percy should mention her help when he writes it.

Eudora reminds Percy that standardized testing is still ahead and that he needs the other two divine recommendation letters by winter break. She offers him a Jolly Rancher and nearly offers sewer-pipe transportation to third period, but Percy quickly chooses to walk. He takes the only blue candy, thanks Eudora, and heads to English class.

In English, Percy feels oddly relaxed despite not having read the assigned story or done the homework. After everything he has been through, Percy believes he can bluff his way through a discussion using Eudora’s suggested themes of bravery, initiative, and self-discovery.
