10. My Singing Makes Things Worse, and Everyone Is Totally Shocked
Overview
Percy’s desperate karaoke apology summons Hebe, but Annabeth’s real strategy is to use Li’l Killer’s youth against the goddess of youth. Hebe is forced into infancy, allowing Annabeth to negotiate the trio’s restoration and safety.
The chapter turns the confrontation with Hebe from punishment into leverage, restoring the heroes to their normal ages and securing the information they need about Zeus’s stolen chalice. Hebe’s warning suggests the quest is about to become more dangerous or complicated.
Summary
Trapped inside the karaoke bar at Hebe Jeebies, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover try to survive the sacred hens battering the doors. Grover barricades the entrance with furniture while Percy and Annabeth search the karaoke machine for an apology song that might persuade Hebe to spare them.
Annabeth chooses John Lennon’s “Jealous Guy,” and Percy, using his squeaky de-aged voice, begins a terrible performance. Annabeth sings along badly, and Grover urges them on as the chickens attack harder. The awful music finally summons Hebe, who appears in glitter and prize tickets with her fingers in her ears and orders them to stop.
The trio apologizes and asks for sanctuary, restoration to their proper ages, and information about Zeus’s chalice. Hebe reacts angrily when Percy mentions the chalice again, seeing the request as more insolence. Annabeth keeps stalling while watching Li’l Killer, the chick they brought inside.
Annabeth’s plan becomes clear when Hebe begins shrinking. Because Hebe’s divine nature requires her to be the youngest in the room, the presence of the newly hatched chick forces the goddess to become younger and younger until she is a helpless newborn. Annabeth uses this reversal to negotiate: if Hebe agrees to forgive them, restore their ages, and share what she knows, Grover will send Li’l Killer away.
Baby Hebe gurgles in what Annabeth accepts as agreement, and Grover convinces Li’l Killer to return to the hens. Once the chick leaves, Hebe grows back into a teenager and snaps her fingers, restoring Percy, Annabeth, and Grover to their normal ages. Still furious, Hebe agrees to tell them what she knows about the chalice, warning that they will not like the answer.
