SECOND INTERLUDE: The One Who Returned
Overview
This interlude presents the foundational Deitist myth of Jenshu, the One Who Returned, explaining how jade came to Kekon and why it is understood as a divine inheritance. It connects Kekonese religious identity to Jenshu’s exile, pilgrimage, discovery of jade, and ascension to Heaven.
The passage also clarifies the spiritual roots of Green Bone culture through Baijen, Jenshu’s nephew and the legendary first jade warrior. By framing jade, virtue, and warrior identity as sacred legacies, the interlude deepens the cultural stakes behind the clans’ power.
Summary
The interlude recounts the central Deitist scripture, the Pact of the Return, which tells of Jenshu, a pious man who opposed a despotic king and was exiled from his homeland. Jenshu gathered his large extended family onto a ship and set out to find the legendary ruins of the original jade palace on earth.
For forty years, Jenshu and his clan traveled the world, stopping in many places without settling. After trials aided and obstructed by gods, they reached an untouched island, where Yatto, the Father of All, rewarded Jenshu’s devotion by guiding him into the mountains to discover jade, described as the remains of the divine home meant for humankind.
While Jenshu’s family founded a village by the shore, Jenshu lived as a hermit in the mountains. Surrounded by jade, Jenshu gained extraordinary wisdom and powers, occasionally leaving seclusion to resolve conflicts, calm earthquakes, fend off storms, and defend the people from invaders.
At the age of three hundred, Jenshu was judged by the gods to be uniquely worthy of returning to Heaven. Kekonese Deitists therefore regard themselves as Jenshu’s descendants and favored by the gods, while Green Bones connect their identity to Jenshu’s nephew Baijen, who learned from Jenshu and became the island’s first legendary jade warrior.
The interlude closes by explaining the Deitist belief that all humanity may eventually return to godliness by achieving the four Divine Virtues: humility, compassion, courage, and goodness. This promised future is known as the Return.
