CHAPTER 29: You’ll Probably Die
Overview
Bero and Cheeky are promoted from theft work to a far more dangerous Mountain assignment: attacking the No Peak-linked Lilac Divine Gentleman’s Club with guns. The job is framed as a test that could earn them clan recognition, but the Green Bone refuses to guarantee anything and makes clear they may die. Bero’s eagerness reveals how deeply his resentment and envy of Green Bones drive him toward escalating violence.
Summary
After No Peak discovers the Docks theft scheme and the Maik brothers punish one crew, Bero grows more afraid of being caught. Mudt then asks whether Bero has been practicing with the Fullerton guns, and Bero says he and Cheeky have been firing them regularly near the reservoir. Mudt tells Bero and Cheeky to come to the Goody Too the next night.
At the store garage, the goateed Green Bone meets Bero and Cheeky more warmly than before because they have survived more than a month of work. The Green Bone says a dangerous new assignment is coming from people far above him, and completing it could prove Bero and Cheeky worthy of being truly cut into the clan.
The Green Bone orders Bero and Cheeky to wait for a call on a Secondday or Fifthday, after which a driver will take them to the Lilac Divine Gentleman’s Club. Their task is to shoot up the No Peak-affiliated club, break windows, frighten customers, and especially damage valuable cars, including a silver Roewolfe if they see it.
Cheeky hesitates because the Lilac Divine is known as a No Peak place where Lantern Men, Green Bones, and possibly even the Pillar might be present. The Green Bone mocks Cheeky and says escaping No Peak territory afterward is their own problem. Bero, impatient with being tested, agrees but demands assurance that the job will get them into the clan; the Green Bone refuses to promise anything beyond a chance to make a strong impression.
Bero remembers Fishhook, an older bully from the Forge who was crippled by No Peak Fingers after assaulting a Lantern Man’s daughter. The memory sharpens Bero’s awe, resentment, and envy toward Green Bones, who seem able to enter his world and destroy or elevate lives at will. The Green Bone leaves Bero and Cheeky to wait for the call, warning that it will come soon.
