Bero, hiding on Little Button after escaping through the tunnel beneath the Goody Too, broods over the fact that Janloon is at war because of Kaul Lan’s death, yet Bero has gained no jade from it. After more than a month, Bero decides the chaos in the city means no one is likely still searching for him, so Bero returns to Janloon.

Bero blames Mudt and the goateed Green Bone for cheating Bero out of jade. Bero buys a revolver in the Mountain-controlled Docks and plans to force Mudt to give up jade by taking Mudt’s son hostage, or else kill Mudt and take it.

When Bero reaches the Goody Too, the shop is dark, boarded up, and ransacked. A homeless man tells Bero that Mudt is dead, implying Mudt was killed because he had jade. Angry that someone else has taken what Bero wanted, Bero breaks into the store anyway and checks the hidden entrance to the tunnel.

Bero finds that the secret storage area beneath the store has not been discovered. Instead of jade, the boxes contain a large supply of shine. Bero realizes Mudt must have been dealing the drug, stuffs vials into Bero’s pockets, and begins planning how to move the stash somewhere safer.

As Bero leaves the hidden room, Mudt’s teenage son surprises Bero with a flashlight and a talon knife. The boy says Maik Tar killed Mudt and vows revenge. Bero lowers Bero’s gun, tells the boy that Bero has killed a Green Bone before, and decides the boy might be useful. Bero encourages the boy’s hatred and claims to know where they can get jade.
