THIRD INTERLUDE: Baijen’s Triumph
Overview
This interlude presents the legend of Baijen, a mortal Green Bone hero who gives up Heaven to return to Earth and kill the invading General Sh’ak. Baijen saves Baijen’s people but is condemned to wander as an exile, turning the myth into a lesson about sacrifice, duty, and martial courage.
The story deepens the book’s cultural framework and mirrors the clan war’s demands on its leaders: survival may require giving up safety, honor, or even spiritual peace for the sake of one’s people.
Summary
This interlude recounts a central Kekonese myth about Baijen, the famous mortal nephew of Old Uncle Jenshu. Baijen is remembered as a courageous Green Bone warrior whose stories have endured through oral tradition, children’s tales, comics, and films, though Baijen is honored as a hero rather than worshipped as a god.
According to legend, Baijen dies in battle against the invading Tuni General Sh’ak. Because of Baijen’s valor, the gods grant Baijen a place in Heaven, where Baijen looks down and sees Baijen’s remaining warriors dying, Baijen’s people nearing defeat, and Baijen’s grieving wife preparing to kill herself before the enemy reaches their home.
Desperate to intervene, Baijen begs the gods to let Baijen return to Earth for one night, offering to surrender Baijen’s place in Heaven to another soul. The gods first refuse, but Baijen persists until Yatto, the Father of All, takes pity and grants the request.
Baijen returns to the battlefield that night, enters General Sh’ak’s tent, and kills the shocked enemy commander. Because of the bargain, Sh’ak’s soul goes to Heaven in Baijen’s place, while Baijen is condemned to wander Earth forever as an exiled spirit.
The myth ends with the Green Bone saying, Pray to Jenshu, but be like Baijen. The tale emphasizes sacrifice, personal courage, and the willingness to give up salvation in order to save one’s people.
