FIRST INTERLUDE: Heaven and Earth
Overview
This interlude recounts a Deitist creation myth in which the gods build Earth, punish their quarrelsome children by making them mortal, and bury shattered jade beneath a mountainous island. The myth frames human conflict as a legacy of divine family betrayal and presents striving, virtue, and appeasement as attempts to recover a lost divine state.
By linking jade, family fracture, exile, and spiritual power, the interlude deepens the religious and cultural foundations behind Kekonese ideas of jade, clan loyalty, and conflict.
Summary
The interlude presents a Deitist creation story. Long ago, the gods lived as an extended family in jade palaces in Heaven. As their descendants multiplied and Heaven grew crowded, the gods built Earth as a second home, making it as beautiful as Heaven with seas, mountains, forests, plants, and animals.
Before Earth was even finished, the gods' spoiled children began fighting over its wonders. Their quarrels over oceans, mountains, and continents became so bitter that the divine parents condemned their greed and jealousy as a betrayal of family harmony.
In punishment, the parents stripped their children of divine power, made them mortal and vulnerable, and exiled them from Heaven to Earth. Yatto, the Father of All, shattered the first half-built jade palace on Earth and buried its fragments beneath a mountainous island.
Even after the exile, the gods continued to watch humanity. Some, such as Thana the Moon and Poya the goddess of agriculture, showed compassion by offering light and food, while others, such as Yofo the typhoon god and Sagi the Pestilence, nursed old grievances and punished humanity when not appeased.
The interlude concludes by explaining the Deitist view that all human conflict began with this original family betrayal, while human progress and virtue are attempts to regain divine forgiveness and return to a lost sacred state.
