CHAPTER 15: A Bargain with Demons

Overview

Hilo coerces the Chrome Demons motorcycle gang into becoming an information network for No Peak, trading leniency and opportunity for leads on Tem Ben and the Mountain’s connection to Three-Fingered Gee’s death. The bargain shows Hilo’s strategic use of fear, respect, and controlled violence while expanding No Peak’s search beyond formal clan channels. It also highlights Obu and Iyn as promising subordinates and Maik Tar as loyal but too eager in cruelty.

Summary

Hilo goes to the Chrome Demons’ warehouse in Coinwash with Maik Tar and two senior Fingers, Obu and Iyn Ro. Hilo is considering promoting Obu and Iyn, and he observes their strengths: Obu’s exceptional Deflection and Iyn’s hard-earned discipline.

Inside the warehouse, the Chrome Demons react to the Green Bones by reaching for weapons. Hilo identifies Okan, the gang leader, by his motorcycle and bearing, then humiliates him by asking whether he values his face or his bike more and immediately breaking Okan’s nose. When younger gang members try to respond with guns, Obu uses Deflection to throw the bikers and furniture back, stopping the fight before it begins.

Hilo frames the visit as clan discipline over street racing, robberies, and disorder in No Peak territory. While Hilo speaks, Iyn calmly gathers the gang’s money and weapons, and Maik and Obu keep the room under control. Hilo judges that Obu and Iyn are applying the right level of force: enough to command fear without unnecessary escalation.

Hilo then reveals his real purpose. He wants information about Tem Ben, the black market jade carver connected to Three-Fingered Gee’s death and to the Mountain. Hilo offers the Chrome Demons a bargain: use their criminal contacts to find Tem Ben and his network, and in return Hilo will leave their money and weapons, avoid further personal visits, and overlook their crimes if they target Mountain territory rather than No Peak ground.

Okan hesitates, tempted by the opportunity but angry at his humiliation. When Okan asks whether the gang will get a cut after No Peak acts against Tem Ben, Hilo sharply reminds him that Green Bone matters are clan business and that the gang’s role is only to provide information. Okan agrees, and after Maik demands proper respect, Hilo restores the bag to Okan in a calculated gesture that preserves enough of Okan’s authority for the deal to hold. Okan kneels and salutes Hilo, pledging to the Horn.
