CHAPTER 57: Forgiveness
Overview
Shae receives a warning from the fugitive Doru urging her to flee Kekon, but she burns the letter and resolves to stay and pursue him. At the Twice Lucky, Hilo’s public forgiveness of Mr. Une restores confidence among No Peak loyalists, even as Shae worries about Hilo’s refusal to forgive Anden.
The chapter shifts from survival after battle to consolidation: the Mountain has retreated but remains dangerous, Ayt has appointed a new Horn, and No Peak’s political strength begins to recover through mercy, loyalty, and renewed economic support.
Summary
Two weeks after the recent fighting, Shae receives an unsigned letter at the Weather Man’s office and immediately recognizes Doru’s handwriting. Doru admits he betrayed her trust while insisting he obeyed Kaul Sen, warns that the Mountain is not defeated, and urges Shae to prepare a private escape from Kekon using her Espenian connections. Shae burns the letter and silently rejects his advice, deciding that she will not run from Kekon and will instead pursue Doru.
At Seventhday brunch at the Twice Lucky, Shae, Hilo, Kaul Sen, and Kyanla share a subdued family meal in the reclaimed restaurant. Wen is absent because she is taking Espenian classes and working at her new job. Shae values Sen’s small moments of lucidity, while also reflecting that No Peak’s fragile peace mirrors the old man’s fragile awareness.
The clan war remains unresolved. The Mountain has pulled back into its southern strongholds, and rumors say Ayt Mada has named Nau Suen, a former warrior and Perception master, as her new Horn instead of Gont’s former First Fist. Hilo tries to act cheerful, but Shae sees that his real pain is not only his injuries from Gont but the loss of Anden, whom he still refuses to discuss.
Shae urges Hilo to forgive Anden, even if Anden cannot yet forgive Hilo. Hilo resists, but Shae has already arranged some protection for their cousin: after finding Anden at her mother’s cottage, Shae spoke to Wen, who spoke to Kehn, who quietly sent two reliable guards to Marenia.
Mr. Une, the owner of the Twice Lucky, approaches the table with a black box containing his severed left ear as an apology for having turned to the Mountain. Hilo accepts the offering by touching the box and publicly forgives Mr. Une, signaling that the Pillar renews his protection and approval. The gesture reassures the restaurant’s patrons and restores confidence among No Peak’s Lantern Men.
After Kyanla takes the tired Kaul Sen home, diners come forward to salute Hilo and Shae, praise the return of peace, and offer money to help Mr. Une with tribute and repairs. Shae senses renewed loyalty, strengthened by No Peak’s regained territory and Espenian jade income. Though Ayt’s vision of one clan over Janloon still looms, Shae resolves that if such unity comes, it will not happen on the Mountain’s terms.
