CHAPTER 33: Down from the Forest
Overview
Shae prevents Hilo from wasting himself in a direct revenge attack on Gont and instead designs a decoy that draws Mountain defenders away from No Peak’s real target. No Peak seizes the Mountain’s key betting houses in the Armpit, and Shae proves that she has fully returned to Green Bone life by fighting and killing alongside Hilo’s men.
The attack transforms Lan’s death from a private tragedy into a citywide escalation: No Peak gains territory, the Mountain suffers heavy losses, and Gont recognizes that the clans have entered open war.
Summary
Gont Asch spends Sixthday at the Silver Spur Cockfight Pit & Bar, a Mountain-aligned business in the south Wallows, when a messenger reports that Kaul Lan is dead and Kaul Hilo is coming to kill Gont. Gont doubts the apparent recklessness only briefly, then accepts that Hilo may be furious enough to attack. Gont clears civilians, gathers Mountain Green Bones, positions lookouts, and prepares to meet Hilo on favorable ground.
The chapter then reveals that the threatened attack is a deception Shae devised. Hilo originally intended a direct revenge mission likely to get him and his fighters killed, but Shae argues that dying in a frontal assault would hand victory to the Mountain. Hilo accepts her plan, sends out a visible decoy convoy toward the Silver Spur, and leads No Peak fighters in borrowed cars toward a different target.
No Peak strikes the Mountain’s three major betting houses on Poor Man’s Road: the Palace of Fortune, the Cong Lady, and the Double Double. Shae leads the assault on the Cong Lady with Eiten and other fighters, openly displaying her jade and ordering them to kill anyone wearing jade. Reawakened to Green Bone violence after years away, Shae kills Mountain defenders with practiced efficiency and helps secure the casino.
After the Green Bones in the Cong Lady are dead, Shae offers the surviving staff a choice: leave alive or swear allegiance to No Peak and keep their jobs. Many remain and begin restoring order, showing how quickly local business adapts to clan rule. Outside, Shae finds Hilo amid fire, street clashes, and battle frenzy as No Peak fighters and sympathetic civilians push across Patriot Street.
At the Silver Spur, Gont receives the true news: No Peak’s attack has killed twenty-one Mountain clan members and placed the entire Armpit under No Peak control. Enraged by the successful ruse and the scale of the loss, Gont declares that the Kaul family has come down from the forest and that the Mountain is now in open war with No Peak.
