CHAPTER 38: The Lantern Man’s Dilemma
Overview
The Mountain launches a major push into No Peak territory and captures the Twice Lucky, a symbolically important restaurant favored by Kaul Hilo. Gont Asch personally kills a No Peak defender, coerces Mr. Une into switching allegiance, and makes clear that the Mountain intends either to absorb No Peak holdings or destroy them. The chapter shows the war spilling directly into civilian businesses and forcing Lantern Men into impossible choices between loyalty and survival.
Summary
The Twice Lucky restaurant has been prospering, but its location near a freeway entrance and clan border makes Mr. Une anxious when two No Peak Green Bones, Satto and Caun, arrive armed and wait at the closed bar. They say Maik Kehn, now Horn of No Peak, expects trouble and needs them to call if it comes. Business is unusually slow because Lan’s funeral has just passed and Janloon expects renewed war.
After noon, Satto receives a call and tells Mr. Une to clear the restaurant because the Mountain has attacked the Docks and is heading their way. Mr. Une evacuates customers and junior staff while the remaining employees secure breakable items and hide in back. Three more No Peak Green Bones arrive exhausted, reporting that Gont Asch himself is leading the Mountain assault and has taken much of the area south of the General’s Ride.
The Mountain reaches the restaurant immediately. The No Peak defenders rush outside, and Mr. Une hides behind the bar as gunfire and fighting erupt. After a short battle, Gont enters with bloodied Mountain warriors; Caun appears dead outside, and Satto is dragged in wounded. Satto defies Gont, but Gont beheads him, awards Satto’s jade to the victors, and orders the bodies cleared before the staff are brought out.
Gont sits down calmly, asks whether the lunch buffet is still open, and requests the restaurant’s ledgers along with crispy squid, a dish he knows is favored by Kaul Hilo. Gont praises the food sincerely, then examines the accounts and raises the tribute due to the Mountain to one and a half times what Mr. Une paid No Peak. Gont tells Mr. Une to swear allegiance so the restaurant can open normally the next day.
Mr. Une tries to refuse honorably, explaining that he and his family have been loyal No Peak Lantern Men for decades. Gont will not allow him to leave, saying the Twice Lucky needs Mr. Une’s management. When Mr. Une still refuses, Gont orders the staff removed and the restaurant burned down. Faced with losing his family’s legacy, Mr. Une yields and pledges allegiance and tribute to the Mountain. Gont accepts and declares that the Twice Lucky is only the beginning: the Mountain will take what it can from No Peak and destroy the rest until Janloon has one clan.
